High School English I - Lesson 7 Space and Technology
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:40:23 am »
Hi everyone, I just wanted to contribute in some way, so here is my powerpoint for a "Technology" lesson.

The basic breakdown is as such:

A slide or two about the different technologies available today as well as the various types of things they can be used for (or could be used for in the future).  Then a brief explanation on pros and cons, which leads into the main activity "Designing a robot".  Using mini whiteboards (or even simple blank sheets of paper) I found that by simply giving the students 10-15 minutes to write their sentences and design their robot and subsequently having said students present their robots, the entire lesson can be cenetered on just robots and/or technology.

Please feel free to tweak this as you like, cheers!

High School English I - Lesson 7 Space and Technology

I made this game for the High School English I textbook, Lesson 7 Space and Technology, Topic 2: Living in Space. It's a multiple choice/ true or false trivia game about space travel. There is one category that is specific to the textbook, but if you change that then you could use it even if you don't have the same textbook.

I also found this video clip of Homer Simpson in space worked well for a warm-up activity (elicit the word "astronaut" from the students after the clip): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnPGDWD_oLE

I got the Jeopardy template from someone else on Waygook (can't remember where/who/when), so all I did was put together the questions   :)

OK, so I did this unit this week. Really, really great game. My coteacher LOVED it too. I changed it a bit. I made all the textbook questions to where there was no multiple choice, but they had to answer in a complete sentence. I then went around and looked over the sentences, helped them make corrections, etc. They then read these to to the class. I also made all of the '100" short answer, with no multiple choice. I just had them give me the response. This worked well as most of them already know the answers to those.
I highly recommend this game, regardless of the book anyone is using. My girls just loved it. Thanks again :)

I taught this unit last week with my 1st and 2nd graders and it worked out great. I incorporated a PPT about Felix Baumgartner (the man who jumped from space) into the lesson and Jeopardy game.

I also showed them the video clip of him jumping....the students go crazy for it.
