Teaching Culture in a High School Conversation Class
« on: October 14, 2014, 12:09:23 PM »
So I have a crazy idea, but I need some help figuring out how to actually use this idea in the classroom. Quick background: I work in an all-girls technical high school, I don't use a textbook, and my students are at a pretty low level. I created units to get the school year some structure and the lesson I am creating is a review of the travel unit for my advanced students (who are still at a conversation level similar to the middle school students I teach).

The advanced students have done some simple readings about food and festivals in different countries (namely: UK, India, Russia, Italy, Vietnam, Brazil). I will attach the worksheets I made for anyone who wants to use them. Each group learned about one country and then presented the information in small groups.

I want to create a review lesson where the students learn a little about the culture of their group's country. They have done readings already so I wanted to do something more hands-on and thought provoking. My idea was to have each group do a culture related activity, after which they would create a simple brochure about their country’s culture based on what they learned from the activity. Ideally this would be something that can be completed in 50 minutes, can be explained and executed in simple English, and that can be done without buying a lot of material out of pocket.

I wish had an example of what I mean by all of this, but I don’t, I am really stumped. Any ideas on what I could do with my students to teach them about the cultures of the UK, India, Russia, Italy, Vietnam, and Brazil?

P.S. The PPT I attached is a reduced version of a PPT made and given to me by a friend, so I cannot take credit for it. I also deleted personal photos from the PPT, so feel free to add your own.

Looks good.  You could have the groups watch and demonstrate a bit of a countries' cultural dance.  Since you are at an all-girls school it may work.  Or else they could make and show off a paper craft from each country.
