Elementary school morning greeting
« on: November 12, 2014, 04:48:17 PM »
I work at 2 elementary schools and after 6 months of asking almost the same questions everyday I am bored. The questions we have to ask are: How are you?, How is the weather? What day is it today? What is the date? Questions 1, 2, and 4 have variable answers but the weather is usually the same and so are the students' feelings. The 3rd question is dumb because it is the same day every week. At my 1st school my main co teacher will not let me change these questions, she even has an order that they have to be in. My second co-teacher might let me mix it up a bit. At my 2nd school I can ask whatever I want and I have changed it up a bit from time to time but they are low level and sometimes they don't understand unless I say something in Korean. What else can I do for an intro? Maybe play a song or a video related to the lesson (I understand this can also be seen as motivation but sometimes I think this may be ok)? Just skip it and begin a review or motivation? Continue with what I'm doing? What do you do for the first few minutes?

In the teachers guide there is a question that we should ask,

"Do you remember the spell scissor?"

So I just ask that.

Not really, I ask about their weekend, plans, where they have been, small survey type activities, "hands up if..." etc etc

I forgot to add that at my second school I usually ask "How was your weekend?" but that has also gotten a bit tiring.

Depending on the days you see each class, you can ask "How was your weekend? What did you do?" or "What will you do this weekend?" I've also asked them about different holidays or vacations as they come up, e.g. "What did you do over Chuseok? Did you get money? What did you eat?" or "What will you do on summer vacation?" Or I ask them if they ate breakfast that morning and if so what did they eat.

Yesterday I asked them the date and then, "So what day is November 11th?" to which they all responded, "Peppero Day!" and I teased, "Okay, so where's my Peppero?"  8) I just try to find light ways to tease them or ask about what's interesting to them. Mostly it's only the higher level students who respond, but my cooperative co-teachers translate some of the questions for the kids, and then more are willing to respond.

Depends on their level. I ask a series of questions related to our lessons so far, but I mix it up. Like I'll ask the sixth graders about an upcoming holiday one day and we'll chat for a minute about that, but the next day I'll ask them what they did over the weekend. I don't "have to" do anything. My youngest kids I'll ask one or two simple questions before singing our "Hello Song."

Can you have them ask each other? Write a list of questions on a PPT and have them quiz their immediate setamate for a minutes or two? My kids would be up for it/well-behaved enough, but I'm not sure about yours.

Take a gander at http://www.dreamenglish.com/

Matt does a lot of different introduction songs that you can try. When I was teaching, I always started with a warm-up song. I would try to different songs, but it's definitely alright to repeat the same song. It will reinforce a concept and, some songs, the students just eat up.

Genki English has some free stuff that you can snag that is very high movement, if you want something like that. You can start with a game, perhaps color related? Maybe have a different color in the corners of the room? Or play the corners game! I would use the beginning of the class to perhaps reinforce an idea that you learned in the previous lesson or any previous lesson. If you can't find a song fitting an idea that you have, just use any nursery beat and make your own song to fit the situation.

If you're looking to do phonics at the beginning of the class, you could do a different letter every day. http://www.littlefox.com/ has a good assortment of free phonics videos you can use, so that is also an option.

I do similar questions. I usually try to relate my questions to the lesson in order to review the previous class at the same time.
Ex. Right now my sixth graders are going over 'You should', 'You should not', and 'It's time to' type sentences. I add to the 'How's the weather today?' question by asking, 'What did your mom tell you to wear today?'
