Quick games
« on: November 19, 2014, 05:39:35 PM »
Sometimes my kids get a little drained during explanations or textbook time.

Does anyone know some quick low tech games that can be completed in 5 or 10 minutes to bring these kids back to life? Something that is versatile and useable on a moments notice?

Rock paper scissors.

write 1, 5, 10 +/- on the board. Use some sentences from the unit and have as many teams as you want. Get students to complete a sentence, make a dialogue, spell, anything and then bet their points. They play RPS against you or the opposing team.

Teams start with zero, so if the team wants to try for 5 points and they win, they get 5 points, they lose, -5, etc.

Low tech!

Whether its drained or noisy. Sometimes I will stop the class. say noonchi game. "english numbers". students have to stand up individually and count up until the last person. if two ppl stand up on any number. they lose. if they do it all in order without two stadning up, the last person loses. This gets their attention and brings them back into focus after the end. punishment for loser can be w/e you want. i usually do "star jumps" jump in the air and look like a star while saying "i'm a star"

Thank you very much. Exactly the type of thing I was looking for.

Looking online I also found this little game.

Pass The Marker:

Put students into as many lines as you want teams, then you give a word or sentence to the person in the front of each line who is holding a marker. They pass the marker to the person behind them while saying the word. The person at the end of the line must run up and write the word or sentence on the blackboard. The fastest team to get the correct answer gets a point.

It's basically a faster paced version of the telephone game.

A variation you could do is have the students draw a picture instead of the word. (may be useful in classes where they have not studied how to spell the vocabulary yet.)

My kids go crazy for a short version of the Telepathy Game. I write one of the target sentences on a sheet of paper, put it behind my back and the kids have to guess which one it is. Works a charm and gets them all talking :)
