Beginner book for a single student
« on: January 02, 2015, 01:23:59 PM »
I have a short class with a single second grade student (I'm a hagwon teacher), and I have been tasked with finding a book for him and assigning homework. His English is almost nonexistent; I have to speak Korean if I hope to be understood. However, he's a good student, and his mother is taking an active interest in his education. Are there any vocabulary-focused books you can recommend for him? Korean translations of vocab words are a plus but not required. Also I'd be happy to hear any advice on how to teach a 20 minute class with him.

Thanks.

You mean second grade elementary? Can you do something like Color Zoo and maybe teach him the names of animals/colors/shapes? It's labeled "Preschool - Grade 1" for sale in America, not sure if that would be too little-kiddish for him...

Level one of Let's Go, Roller Coaster, or Fun Fun English would all be good texts to start with.

Yes, elementary. I should have clarified - he knows numbers, colors, animals, and the alphabet. But he's barely capable of speaking more than a couple words at a time.

Mostly what I'm after is a homework book. I only teach him 20 minutes a week so I don't even really need a book for use in class. But I should give him homework, and at his level, he needs basic conversational vocabulary.
