This is great!  How did you play the game? Did you divide the class into teams?

I've got a ton of material. Some of it is modified forms of what is already out there, but just because the title card looks the same doesn't mean the contents are. If you're stumped, there should be enough here to keep you busy. Hope it helps!

I made this PPT to explain countable and uncountable nouns through saying "Can I have 1, a, 2, a few, some [insert countable noun i.e. apple/s, grape/s, chestnut/s]?"
"Can I have some, a little bit of [insert uncountable noun i.e. water, rice, juice, candy]?"
Then we played Pictionary.  Two teams and one student from each team comes to the board and draws the food I whisper to them.  The other students guess, but they must say the sentence "Can I have..."  The students LOVED it.  I made a list of foods: Kimbap, Kimchi, Jajangmyeong, Salad, Hamburger (have to use 'a' not 'some'), Rice, Samgyeopsal, Ddeokbokki, Corn, Cereal, ABC chocolate, Steak, Juice, Kimchi Jiggae, and Boshintang.

i was skeptical about the video at first, but then played it for my 6th graders.  they loved the "can i, can i..." part and all of the mention of korean food.  great for getting them hungry and primed for participation!  even the girls sketching in their textbooks stopped to listen!!

great way to start the class!  (ps, Lesson 6 will get "easier" to teach as lunchtime nears...students start to care more!!...haha)

A Pass the Paper game for review and a Ghostbusters Game (Like a Bomb game) Both are modified from other posters. Thanks! Ghostbuster game uses simple vocabulary words instead of letters or numbers for choosing squares.

[Mod edit: Ppt and game changed to delete inappropriate image, please check ppts before you use them]

Grade 6 "Can I have some water"-singing competition
« Reply #13 on: June 04, 2010, 02:54:54 PM »
Hi All!
I watched the Youtube video for "Can I have some water?" and really liked it. I knew my kids would too. I also know that my students like competition, so I decided to have a singing competition for that class.

I showed the students that youtube video and then had them practice singing it a few times. Once they had it down we discussed what things (foods and beverages) they sang about in the song. We then brainstormed and discussed other foods and beverages.

I then divided then into groups and handed them a hand out which had the lyrics of the song which I typed up with blanks. In their groups they had to fill in the blanks using news words (food and beverage words) that they learned in class or ones they already know. They then practiced singing their version of the song, and then presented it to the class.

My students really enjoyed it. The once who normally don't like singing actually enjoyed this. It also got a lot of my shy and lower level students talking and singing, which I was really excited for!

I've attached the hand out I made for that class.

Used both today and both are great. The kids particularly enjoyed Pass the Paper and everyone got a turn.

Thanks!

It's such a simple game and I've had great success using it with virtually ever topic and class level. The original "Pass the Paper" games are from EFL Classroom 2.0, so they deserve all the props. I just adapt it for different classes and levels. Glad your classes enjoyed it!

Grade 6 Lesson 6 - "Can I Have Some Water" lessons.

Hello,
I've merged the three posts we had for Grade 6 Lesson 6.

If people like this, I will do it for the rest of the grades and lessons to make sure everybody finds all the resources collected here.

I'm not sure it's possible to create a subfolder for each grade and another folder for each lesson.  But, what I can do is make a checklist for each grade and sticky it atop the elementary forum.

Please let me know what you all think (not on this thread, keep this devoted to 6-6).

I just had open class with this lesson, and we used the typhoon game (with some modifications) and then we had a lunch game activity where the students filled out a menu and then walked around asking various students for different food cards that they had written down on their paper.  Here is the stuff:
