Last Class Ever - 5th and 6th Grade
« on: February 04, 2015, 03:55:05 PM »
Hey, I was wondering if you all had some good recommendations for final classes with 5th and 6th grade (mostly low level students). I'm leaving Korea after a couple years, and wanted to do something fun and hopefully meaningful, but I'm feeling stuck.

I saw the idea about having them make postcards, and I liked that, but we did it recently. And as of today they seem to be totally done with any sort of project, so I'm thinking simple, energetic games, followed by a very short and simple presentation about learning English and my time teaching them the last couple years, and finally class photos.

What's worked for you in the past? Any good ideas? I really appreciate whatever advice you guys have! :)

I'm going to teach them SIMPLE poetry.

Probably something like a "me poem"  (google it)

Hi
I have had them make a page about themselves to collate into a booklet that I can keep to remind myself of my time teaching them.

Ideally they can bring a photo of themselves to glue into the center of the page and I have different categories for them to write about eg I like .....   (3 lines for 3 different things), In my family is (me, my mom, dad, sister, brother etc)., When I grow up I want to be .....

It doesn't take the whole lesson (depending on how they do it!!!)  It is a writing activity but is is about themselves and you can make a booklet to keep when you leave.  It is fun to look through them.

I played scattegories with my 6th graders today... basically I wrote the letters of the alphabet in a jumble on the board, closed my eyes and picked one. Then they had to thing of an animal, food, country etc that begins with that letter. I've attached a very basic worksheet, you can adjust it if your kids are at a higher level.

I decided on teaching them a "culture" lesson.  I taught them the song When I'm Gone (the Cup Song by Anna Kendrick). We watched the music video, and learned the lyrics.  Then I taught them how to do the cup moves.  They all really enjoyed it, even the students that don't normally participate.

I only taught here for one year, and I had 22 different classes to teach, so I didn't have nearly as many memories or pictures to share with each individual class as you might.  It's not the most sentimental last class, but my students all loved it. Plus the song itself is relevant since I'm leaving, and for the 6th graders they're going to middle school.

Minute to win it. The kids really enjoy playing games like this and it works even with low level students.
You can find the materials if you search this site, but you will have to adapt to suit your students and the materials you have available.

I ended up doing a scavenger hunt around the school. I put 5 English questions paired with clues around the school. The last clue had candy. Then I went with a team (4 students) and timed them. The fastest team wins. The other 5 teams played games with my coteacher in the classroom. It was exhausting running around the school so many times, but for me it was worth it getting to spend more intimate time with them in small groups for our last class together and seeing how much fun they were having.
A couple things to keep in mind in case you wanna do this:
1) If lunch is starting for other grades, the hallways will be busy with smaller students. I had a rule saying they could walk fast, but no running. 30 second penalty for running.
2) Your hints might disappear. I had to put up extras during the day. Be prepared to give them the hint if it's missing. Maybe put the hints up high where they're harder to reach.
