High School - House Theme
« on: August 28, 2009, 09:55:32 am »
here is a lesson that teaches furniture in the house (which most students will know but it's a review in order to do the rest of the lesson), it also teaches "dirty" words like stained, mouldy, etc.

students get to draw their own dirty house in groups, label it and present it.

you can also teach cleaning words (not provided) and have students make sentences about how to clean their house.

Hey, I did this lesson with my middle school, they loved it, I was surprised by how many were really grossed out by the house that I showed. I showed it again the next week as a clean house and taught them the "clean words" they really enjoyed this a lot! thanks for the idea!!!!

I just found this website that has a ton of vocab for housekeeping that can help expand this lesson.

http://www.englishclub.com/english-for-work/housekeeping-vocabulary.htm

And this one has some related clipart images(in spanish and English):
http://www.123teachme.com/learn_spanish/cleaning_vocabulary_1

eslprintables.com has quite a few worksheets about cleaning:

Rooms in the house flashcards:

The Oxford ESL Picture Dictionary has some related pages as well.

Updated Dirty Houses Lesson
« Reply #7 on: November 01, 2010, 10:46:35 am »
This is my updated version of the dirty houses lesson. I combined the dirty and clean houses parts into one 50 minute lesson which goes like this:

1. Introduce rooms of the house and furniture/appliances in each one.

2. Watch a 5 min clip from How clean is your house. After, discuss briefly with your students - get them to say what was dirty, and how they felt watching it.

3. Lesson's vocab and key phrase. First, "dirty words", then sentence structure for talking about a dirty house and saying how to clean it. Finally, phrases/verbs for cleaning the house.

4. Group work. I put them into small groups - 2 teams per table of 6/7 students. They have to choose a room in the house, draw it, then label three things that are dirty. Last they write sentences to say how to clean their dirty room.

5. Assign today's homework.

6. If there is still time, you can watch the second video clip which is the after footage of the guy's now clean house. My students LOVED this part!

I didn't use a worksheet this time, but I asked the students to write all the vocab and key sentences in their notebooks.

Dirty houses lesson for middle school
« Reply #9 on: November 10, 2010, 09:12:02 am »
The PPT is basically stolen from above. I modified it to match the level of my G1&2 middle school students. I created a worksheet and a PPT game to go with it. The answers for the game and worksheet are on the PPT. Just download, print, then teach!

(addtl notes: the game was the end of my lesson, the clean video at the end is only a last resort if you have extra time which you shouldn't (will watch next week). When watching the dirty video stop around 4:00. During each vocab word for PPT I asked what they do in the room, or what the furniture is used for. The slides at the end of each room (pics but no words, I would call on students who looked like they weren't paying attn and point to a picture , if correct 2 group pts, incorrect -2pts, if help/cheat -2pts. Next week will be part 2 ,the clean words and expressions, also to be stolen from above. Tell the students to bring the wksht to the next class....I will at the least make the answers for the game for the next weeks lesson using some of the words from this weeks wksht) If you want, I will post next weeks lesson (same Wksht, video, game....format) as soon as I finish.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to this site!

One more thing: I had a few minutes at the end and we watched 2NE1's new video "It Hurts", then the students needed to make up sentences about what was dirty in the house in the video. They loved it.

Did your students know what a Settee was? I  had to look it up to see what it was.  I'm also guessing British as "tin opener" instead of can opener, lol.  Good Work!

MTV Cribs Lesson
« Reply #16 on: January 27, 2011, 09:38:12 am »
I used this lesson during my winter camp and it went over really well. Good for talking about "home/houses" vocabulary/exposing kids to a bit of good 'ole fashioned Amurican excess ;) First we watched this episode of MTV Cribs, available for free streaming here:

http://www.mtv.com/videos/mtv-cribs-season-16-ep-2-t-pain-colbie-caillat-cisco-adler-and-shwayze/1591081/playlist.jhtml#series=2211&seriesId=5941&channelId=1
The quality of the video is pretty low...but the kids didn't really seem to mind...

We only focused on the "T-Pain" portion of the show. We watched it twice and then went over the comprehension questions on the attached worksheet together.

After we completed the worksheet, I gave each kid a sheet of drafting paper and had them design their own "Crib". You could make this portion much more comprehensive by having them write a few sentences describing their Crib to turn in for evaluation, or even have them give a presentation to the rest of the class if there is time. Of course, in larger non-camp style classes you could arrange the students into groups, have them do group presentations, ect.

Enjoy!

Nice idea! I had a similar lesson saved on my computer that  never used.... So, I just edited this one a little:

Here is what I will use:

I tested it with one extra class that I had... We finished the worksheet. But, had no time for the group work. So, we just discussed and designed a perfect house on the white board. Not ideal, but worked out alright.

Nice lesson, I used it with my higher levels and they really liked it. Modified the PPT a bit and went with a different video (Ludacris). Great idea OP! Thanks again!

Looks great, but would it be possible for you to upload the documents in .doc form instead of .docx? Thanks!!!  :)
