I'm just wondering if something was behind it. I asked about the (v) sign a long time ago and was told it was a (V) for victory sign. Not peace? No, Victory...ok

I wonder if it has something to do with deflecting the inherent awkwardness and overt vanity of standing around taking pictures of your own face. It's kind of like false modesty or self-deprecation... It allows someone to be the focus of attention while providing an avenue of plausible deniability with regards to their vanity. "If I look a little silly doing it, maybe people won't think about me standing in a bathroom staring at myself as though I deserve attention", must be what they think.
