Holy Smokes! FREE Taxi rides. Up to 30 times!
« on: March 01, 2015, 03:21:02 PM »
Hey
Sharing this will probably prevent me from getting a taxi in Seoul. But uberX is offering up to 30 free taxi rides. (up to 30,000 fare limit) in seoul.

I've used uberX almost 10x now and prefer it over regular taxis as it's almost half the cost (when I did pay!)

Also you can double dip and also get 10k if it's your first time signing up for Uber.

https://www.uber.com/invite/ubercodes

Finally, here is the official news from the UBER Korea blog about this promotion:

Here is a picture of my free ride which took 1 hour 17min

so i saw this a month ago, maybe it has changed. I heard that the korean government, i think only in seoul, is paying ppl to report uber drivers. you get a monetary reward. you need like video footage, and a receipt or something. things could have changed, but i did see something like this a while back

I would never use uber but I imagine that the driving is safer than the average taxi driver, I mean it can't be worse.

Taxi drivers are as crazy as the rest of the Koreans on the road. I drive and find them all equally awful. No wait, Bongo drivers are the worst. The lorry drivers scare me the most, not because they any worse than other drivers but the fact that they K driving with a huge lorry.

i feel pretty safe. are they more likely to turn a blind eye to traffic signals and the like? maybe. but for pretty dense urban areas, i see less traffic accidents here then in America. furthermore, define crazy how you like, we might agree. but that doesn't make me feel less safe. i suppose everyone is entitled to there opinion. for the sake of the topic though. I would probably side with taxi driver's being more safe than your average korean driver. its safe to say they have more hour/day experience driving behind the wheel. i like to thing that with most things, the more experience you have with something, the better you are at it.

Korea's car crash fatality is twice as high as america's. I just think those tow companies are insane here and respond within minutes of an accident.

As much as I hate the general company and idea of uber, I am almost happy to see this as an option when I'm in Seoul. Taxi's in Korea can be exhausting. From the fact that Koreans will just walk in front of you to get a taxi, to the fact that there's no good address system and drivers will constantly tell me their special way of calling an area (or not even knowing said area despite living in a city their entire lives), to getting weird about dropping off before initial destination, to refusing to take you somewhere in seoul because it's too close, to doing that stop-start gas peddling which supposedly runs the meter, to driving insanely to get an extra ride that night. At least on uber I can rate my driver.

READ THIS if you live in seoul. i've experienced many times getting refused a ride because the distance was "too close" or because i'm a foreigner.

Hey got a message about stories about possibly being charged on the "free ride" so I tested it out myself and rode on a UBERX (BMW 5 series) for 1 hour 17min and it was 0.

I just attached a link to my receipt on the first post.

After having an altercation with the police over a taxi ride, I have learned.

I will NEVER get in a Taxi that is not a clearly marked taxi with a taxi light on top. Not a van taxi, not a black "taxi," not if they don't have a meter, etc...

Police won't do shit. Long story short, Van taxi tried to prey on me, but didn't realize I have been in Korea for a while, and get speak when needed, in Korean. 110$ fare for 40$ dollar ride.

I told him call the cops, told the cops he didn't have meter, and lied to me etc...

They just said up to you guys to deal with it and let it be. The guy later stalked me and assaulted me. Thank POLICE! I payed him 60$ (before the assault)

However, cops can not force you to pay a fair that there has been no meter on. Just an FYI.

If cab tells you, no meter 40$, then gets you there and says 60$ tell them to **** off an pay 0.

What you put into Korea, is what you will get out of Korea; it will not spoon feed you.

I've used Uber a couple of times recently, but not in Korea. I found it to be all right, although I suppose it could be different in Korea.
