Lesson 3. Period (Chapter) 4
Activity: Sleeping Elephants

[ groups of 4. reading / writing ]

Notes:
- Feel free to the change the sentences around.
- I made some of them direct sentences / questions as a little treat for the kids.
- I did allow my kids to make notes / memos.
- I never get to the end of the 8 sentences, but they're there anyway.

Sentences:
  • Why are you happy, Taeyeon?
  • I'm worried. I have a math test.
  • Everything will be okay, Reaper.
  • Why are you sad, Suga?
  • Because I have a new bike.
  • Don't worry, Momo. I'll help you.
  • Why are you angry, Hulk?
  • Because my brother broke my iPhone.

Enjoy!

Made a quick PPT to help students think of other reasons for feelings.
This is to be used before a group brainstorm-where students will try to come up with a mind map of other reasons.
Then after the brainstorm we will play Mr C's "Because Game".

Here is a simple telepathy game using the vocab words and key phrases from this lesson. This is my favorite telepathy template of all the ones floating around. Hope it helps.

This chapter mixes past, present AND future tenses. -_-

I taught the past in L2, so Lesson 3, part 1 just distinguishes between the past and present forms of the key verbs/expressions.

Here's a PPT on the future as well.

Evolution Game

Thanks to the creator~

I've edited the Evolution Game for use in 5th period of the lesson to replace 'Act and Play'. If my students have to make their own materials like the book suggests they'll take so long that we'll lose most, if not all, of our language production time.

- The students have to come up with nouns when answering the questions i.e.
"Why are you sad?"
"Because I can't find my _______."

- The winner of RPS has to make an appropriate sentence when responding to the loser i.e.
"Don't worry. I'll _____________________."

To win the game the students have to reach level 5, beat a teacher at RPS and use the correct English. If they fail when challenging a teacher you could reset them to level 1 if you were feeling mean or had a lot of time to fill but I think I'll probably just bump them back to level 4.

I just made a Telephone Charades activity for Lesson 3. The pages are in the order of the rounds.
Rules:
Students form two lines. Show the card to the student at the end of the line. Next, that student must act out the message on the card for the person in front of them. The chain continues until it reaches the student at the front. This student must guess the answer aloud.

-Cut out the cards. Your co-teacher can use one set of cards with team one and you can use the other with team two.
-The team who guesses the fastest will earn a point.

Hi,

It's that time of the year where the teacher burn out sets in. Here is a word search for this lesson that should eat up about 10 mins. Use wisely.

Cheers!

Speaking game.

I set up 6 plastic bins, and to each one I attached a picture card depicting a reason (ex: "because there is a big dog").  The students rolled a dice, and the number corresponded to an emotion, maybe 1 = happy, so then the class asks "Why are you happy?" after the "it" student rolls that number.  Then the student has to shoot a ball into the basket that corresponds to a plausible  reason.  I gave 1 point for a made basket no matter what reason they gave, and 2 points for a made basket that matches the emotion and the reason well.  I did this as a group game, where one member of each group took a turn.  Fun way to practice the expressions and it gets the students thinking about linking the "why" questions and "because" answers.

Also: vocabulary worksheet - words, key expressions, and look and listen script with some fill in the blanks.

Intro PPT for Part 4. As usual I like to model the format of the reading passages just so that they get more practice/prep. Includes two mini dialogues ft. the we bear bears. Dialogue 1: Ice bear is sad bc he lost his crab. Dialogue 2: Panda bear is angry because grizzly bear crashed his bike.

Worksheet to take the place of the Write and Share portion. Students choose one emotion and write a sentence for why they're feeling that way. They then draw a picture to go with it.
