2015 Grade 6 YBM 1 - 3. What Does She Look Like?
« on: March 05, 2015, 04:08:51 PM »
So I used this to ease my 6th graders into the new lesson- last year they were in 5th grade and used Cheonjae/the orange book, which has the chapter 'She Has Long, Straight Hair' so they know descriptive adjectives etc. This PPT revises hair colour, length, eye colour, big small short tall etc.

Also has some new year rules for anyone interested.

Here's a worksheet for introducing key vocab/expressions. One of the activities (Story Time 1 gap fill) is basically the same as the one in the teachers' guide.

ADDED:
Reading game: Modified from something I used last year. Thanks to the original creator.
Running dictation (my students tend to enjoy this activity)

Sudoku Vocab.
Was going to be for period 1 but I didn't finish it in time so it will be for period 3

Colour-coded the answer box. Should make it a little easier for making your own sudoku vocab worksheets.

1st session - vocab and key sentences. Thanks to the op for the Connect4 game.
2nd session - we combine the 2nd and 3rd periods.
3rd session - we do the reading (part 4).
4th session - (part 5) writing game, thanks to the op for the template that I modified for this lesson.
5th session - (part 6) practice inspired by the story pot.

I made a key sentence and vocab worksheet. The other worksheets are book recommended/given to me by my coteacher.

Here's my contribution for lesson 3. Be sure to check this post every now & again as I'll be editing it if/when I make more ppt's for the later parts of the lesson.

Pass the Ball game: Instructions included in the PPT. (Ideal for the first or second period)

Baskin Robbins 31 game: Students play in pairs, taking turns reading either 1, 2 or 3 boxes. Whoever reads box 31 is the loser. (Ideal for the fourth period)

Word Lotto game: Each student (or team, if you want to do it that way) has to write down any 3 words shown on the screen. Teacher clicks to reveal the next slide with the 3 "lucky" words. If anyone guessed all three right, they get a point. Error on slide 18, change 'make' to 'red' (Ideal for the fifth period)

Find the monkey Reading Game.

Students read words of their choice; click on it and reveal to see if the monkey is behind that word.

Monkey=point. Banana= -1 point.

*You can edit the words as you please.

we are going to use whiteboards and give every student a marker to each draw one part of the descriptions given on-screen.

using the timer in the book the students will have ten seconds to do their part.

then they'll bring them up to the front of the room where points will be deducted for any mistakes and the best team (teacher's favourite) will get an extra point, if all are correct.

the attached ppt is bare bones, text only, waiting to be pimped.

This is a drawing game that went over very well with my kids. Basically they're in teams and one person draws while the other team members have to decribe the picture. At the end of the minute (a minute might not be enough so I'll press the back button and start the timer over again 2 or 3 more times) the person who was drawing needs to descirbe their picture and every sentence they make is one point  (i.e. She has big eyes. She is wearing jeans, She is wearing a blue jacket. etc..) and then the best picture or the picture that looks most similar to the real picture gets two bonus points. It's also all kpop-related pictures and I hope your kids watched Unpretty Rapstar!

I did this last year and will repeat again for grade 6 - YMB Book 1

UPDATE : I've made a series of "Who's Behind the Card?" drawing games that practice descriptions and phrases from the book as well as some new like 'skin color', beard , etc. The kids love to draw the hints and then try to guess the characters.
I made part 1 and 2 and even a monster edition for the high level class that worked really well:

Behind the card part 1 & 2 links: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2016/04/whos-behind-card-draw-and-guess-game.html

Monster edition: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2016/05/famous-monsters-lesson.html

Best ppt I ever did = made it with my student's photos, ppt to download is blank and you fill it with their pictures , ppt includes the wigs, eyes , noses and mouths...etc for you to fit on to your photos - students died with laughter ! http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/10/crazy-dress-up-powerpoint-activity-what.html

Drawing game- http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/10/easy-drawing-game-reviewguessing-game.htmla simple classic, get them to draw what they describe in pairs,
I start the lesson by having volunteers come to the front and draw what I describe - make it funny, "she has big big big blue eyes" ,etc. Or, if confident, have students act as the teacher instructing the volunteers also. Or, another fun way - if you have mini white boards and markers, you can instruct the enitre class at the same time. Happy teaching!

Make up class lol
- used this for an afterschool class that was girls only, so if you have a high ratio of girls it might be fun: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/06/lets-here-it-for-girls-style.html

Hi all. I saw this video on youtube and decided to make it into a ppt. You can use it to introduce or review key words/ vocab. It uses the incredibles characters.

This is a speed game that is really fun. Separate the class into 2 groups and have one representative from each team come to the front - they are not to face the board where the PPT is projected. The team can see the image projected on screen and must descibe what they look like "she has red hair, she has white pants...etc"
the team representative has a piece of paper with all the characters and names and must choose who it is, the teacher checks if correct.

Hope it can be fun in your class. :) 8)

This worked really well for  my class. I modified the points a little. I made all students stand up and each got a turn to read a word. If the word is blank, they are safe. Banana- they are out (sit down). Monkey- they get to save a student who is sitting. I had to add a few more monkeys and bananas. The students requested it the next lesson so it seems they loved it! Thanks NatZ for the ppt
