I mean, give them the Kpop lesson, make your points, but at least point out ways in which Kpop might be something positive, empowering, etc... Right?

I see what you're saying. Show them both sides. I concentrated on how they are being decieved and manipulated by Kpop. I figured this was best because they are going to listen to it anyway. This way they can listen to it with a discerning eye. The point I made about desensitization was more of a warning. I was saying look at the US, this is what is going to happen to you guys. Also, desensitization wasn't the only thing I discussed. It was meant to be a lecture about manipulation in the media but my last slide didn't work, a link to an online ppt about subliminal advertising. As a result I focused on Kpop. Admittedly the ppt is subpar but I was sharing upon the request of the OP. It is not prepared for the critical eye. Anyway, on Kpop I included the robotic training, unattainable image, influence, and etc... Perhaps I should have vocalized more of the positive aspects that draw them to it? I think they know these but maybe only viscerally. It might have been better to intellectualize it a bit. Maybe after my lecture they might feel guilt or shame for liking it? What do you see as the positive aspects of it? I just see a sense of social belonging and musical interest.

Pls explain how pin-ups and such has led to the degradation of America... and how erotica is the downfall of Korea.... actually don't.

I don't know if I should even get into this discussion.. I can see it getting ridiculous....
What you put into Korea, is what you will get out of Korea; it will not spoon feed you.

I don't want to get into either. Especially if you are going to oversimplify my points to make it seem like ridiculous hyperbole. I was responding to an inquiry. I was not trying to convince you are anyone else of moral superiority or anything at all.

I agree. I would avoid the whole erotic images in general, it's too convoluted. History always goes in cycles of conservative images to much more 'liberal' images. I mean if you watch old korean movies, there are a surprisingly large amount of nudity, so you could argue that it's gotten better?

Morfee, your contribution made me laugh. Quite useful.

Personally, right or wrong, I think sonofthedude is on the right track.
1. He's trying to give more meaning to his english teaching. I'm sure the effort/thought is more than many other kindy/elementary hagwoners out there. only an assumption

2. His lesson idea is now under peer review after introducing it here. Without scrutiny/constructive criticism, no lesson would improve.

3. For me anyway, it's not exactly what i teach them, although its sure to have an impact even if a small one, but it's how to think. Not to think that the status quo is a certain way, but  to learn how to think. To investigate, to question one's given understanding. I'm sure not many Korean students have thought about Kpop in that way and/or been taught about it in Korean classes and esp not english classes for that matter. Many students, at least a lot of my middle schoolers, aren't super in to english. It's a constant challenge to keep them interested and focused. To introduce topics as such, could open the doors for young learners in more than just the English conversational context.

One thing I am doing about it is teaching my high school students the truth about how bunk the world we live in is. I taught them a lesson about how much bullshit kpop is and how it lessens their self esteem and influences them/their consumption. The singers are all fake robots who don't give a shit about them, they have plastic faces, and etc... Obvious for us but a revelation to the students. All or at least 3 of my 4 classes gave me an ovation at the end of the lesson. The kids are hungry for this type of information. I wish I would have learned similar things when I was in high school. So I try to share stuff like that with the kids.

That's really interesting man. One would probably have to go about this more delicately with middle schoolers etc. Do you have ppts that go with such lessons? I'd be interested in taking a look at them. I know you can find stuff on here about "beauty" and what it is and touches upon korea being number 1 for plastic surgery and how beauty doesnt have to mean one thing etc etc.

I have a real simple ppt that didn't use most of. I ended up gearing the discussion towards kpop. I showed an Elvis controversial video for its time and showed a Miley Cyrus video and showed how much we have devolved or become desensitized to erotic imagery. Then I talked about kpop and how fake they are. One interesting comparison I have discovered after making the lesson is 1940's pin ups to Kpop girls. They both show a lot of leg but that's it. So you can see where kpop is headed. Anyway I attached the ppt. I am working on more and can post them as I go.

Was one of your key expressions "Get off my lawn, ya whipper-snappers!"?

only read part of it but its always some political party trying to get people to 'wake up'. nothing new or eye opening. now its a communist telling us to wake up...yea i read about that from marx and engels. Now is the time to wake up! Now is the time for revolution!

I just want to respond to this because it's a really big misconception of Marxism.  Marx and Engels never 'called for' a revolution.  They just thought it was the inevitable end to capitalism.  It wasn't about a bunch of bored over-educated young people deciding to start a riot.  It's about workers not being able to provide for themselves anymore due to the nature of capitalism and being forced to violently overthrow those that support such a system.  You can agree or disagree whether or not a revolution is inevitable, but we have to present the theory honestly first.

As to the OP.  Dude, this stuff should have been covered in a dorm room while smoking various things years ago.  I remember thinking about this stuff bored in my room as a teenager, and this was before youtube and the internet.  I think you can find similar screeds from my journal at the time if you can get through all the terrible poetry, haha.
