2015 Grade 6 YBM 1 - 2. What Grade Are You In?
« on: March 11, 2015, 02:09:03 PM »
Here's a ppt game I made for this lesson. Pretty straightforward, student look at some shelves with a lot of clutter on them and try to remember which shelf a certain item is on. Slides of cluttered shelves are set to transition after a certain length of time, each time gets shorter. You can play the game however you want. In our class we put the kids in groups with whiteboards and they had to write down the shelf in an ordinal number format (1st or first etc). If they were right they got a point. Students are overwhelmed at first due to amount of stuff on the shelves but the more they see and remember the more they get into it.

I didn't use an introduction ppt for this lesson because my coteacher had flashcards, but this is a speaking game that is quick and easy. I paired it with BINGO to make about 15 mins worth of material. i call this game "speed read". In pairs, each student starts at either end of the ㄹ and reads the words as quickly and accurately as they can, at the same time. When they reach the same tile, they rock paper scissors and the winner continues while the loser goes back to their start. the winner is the person who makes it all the way through the tiles to the other side. they can play as many times as you need to fill the time allotted.

Here's a quick PPT I put together that goes over the new words using the pictures from the flashcards given. I also put a section counting ordinal numbers, and a quick key phrase section.

"Where is the ____?"
"It's on the __ floor."
"Thank you very much"
"No problem"

Pretty basic ppt, feel free to add or change, and make it your own.

I'm using this to start the class, then going straight into the book and playing the "play zone" game with them. I'll attach the play zone 1, building sheet as well if anyone needs it.

(I've informed moderators so hopefully this thread will be linked on the topic post.)

Newbie here, (hope I'm doing this right) but I've prepared a ton for this lesson and most of it is original content relevant to 1 차시 and 2 차시.

1. Dialogue Presentation

Small cartoony dialogue I made to illustrate floor numbers. I had them guess what number floor the character would end up on, it was easy for my students and they thought it was cute.

2. Matching Dialogue Game
The template for this isn't mine but I can't remember who I took it from (sorry). However the cards are mine and I've edited it a lot to suit this topic. Find your partner by asking "What floor are you on?" Without showing your card to anyone. A tiny bit outside the vocab for the lesson, but they picked it up well. At the end I asked the matching members "What floor are you on?" and they got to pick out a sticker. I used this game for a lot of topics & grades.

3. Information Desk Roleplay Game
This is a game I made from scratch. 5 students play the information desk, and the rest of the students get shop cards. The students must ask the information desk students (who have a sheet of info paper) what floor their shop is on, and go to the corresponding place on the board. At the end I ask "What floor is the ___ shop on?" to all of the students. I made a round two to switch up the students who play the information desk. Also I hand out the cards before explaining the game to create suspense on the "i" card.

4. Rock Paper Scissors Matching Game
This uses the same number cards as the matching game. I ask what floor are you on? And show a number. Two students stand and say "I'm on the __ floor!" and they do a rock paper scissors, whoever wins gets a small prize. Didn't have time to test this one in class, but the students seemed excited when I started to explain it.

5. Ordinal Numbers Pass The Ball - "Happy, Pharell Williams"
Credit to someone else for the penalties, but the rest is mine! I figured a modern pop song would be cool for the music. Can't figure out how to have the song continue where it left off but howandever the kids enjoyed it. Penalties and questions can be changed and used for any topic or level- my third graders keep asking me to play this again :)

Long post, hope it's helpful. I've attached all materials.

YBM Grade 6 Lesson 2 Intro (2015)

Here is a ppt I made to introduce the new vocab of Lesson 2 ("What Grade Are You In?")

NOTE TO MODS: The instructions for what to do are not clear to the layman ("Create a new thread and report to moderator"). I see no benefit in keeping links for the various chapters closed until people report material to you. How about just opening them ALL so we can post freely. I for one would have posted more and saved myself a lot of time downloading others' material had this already been done. Thanks for reading and thanks for all the effort you put in to this site.

I'm hopping onto Ben's thread here in hopes that it will be linked from the 6th Grade New Textbooks page.  Here are some things that might be useful for Lesson 2 in the new YBM Book- "What grade are you in?"

Memory Game:  The first game is a simple Memory Game to be played with the class split into groups or teams.  Just show the first slide for about 30 seconds to let everyone memorize.  Then, choosing different groups (I pick their group number randomly by drawing sticks to make it fair), see if they can answer the questions.  I.e. "Where is the Elephant?"/ "It's on the second floor."  A correct guess wins that group a point.  *(I didn't make this one, so, much thanks to the original contributor!)

Flick Game: Next, here's a Flick Game I made using the same nouns and kind of layout as the Memory Game, so it might be useful as a follow-up activity.  Just print one sheet per pair of students.  They can play RPS to see who will go first.  S1 will flick a coin, eraser, or other game piece from the "START" position.  S2 asks "Where is the _______?" depending on where the game piece lands.  S1 answers, "It's on the ______ floor."  Take turns.  They can keep score on scratch paper or in a notebook.

Practice PPT:  Just a very very simple PPT using the pictures of cards from p.275.  It might be useful to review before the card game below.

Card Game using cards on p.275:  Finally, there's a mingling game called "Silent Rock, Paper, Scissors" that I like to play and could be done easily using ONLY the store cards from the book on p. 275.
To prepare for "Silent RPS," the students will need to tear out their 6 cards and on the back of each write X (scissors), O (rock) or a square (paper).  For this game they should also write "1st," "2nd," "3rd," "4th," or "5th" in the corner on the back of each card.
When students stand up, walk around the classroom, and meet their friends, the dialog goes like this:
S1 (looking at the front of S2's cards): Where's the (bakery)?
S2 (looking on the back of his bakery card): It's on the (3rd) floor.
*Take turns*
S2 (looking at the front of S1's cards): Where's the (shoe store)?
S1 (looking on the back of his shoe store card): It's on the (1st) floor
*Now for the "Silent" RPS part*
Both students turn over their cards silently, or count down "3,2,1" and turn over their cards (bakery and shoe store).  Looking at the marks O, square, or X they can figure out who is the winner using the rules of Rock, Paper, Scissors.  The winner takes the loser's card and they go to meet new friends.  After about 5 minutes of play call time and students return to their seats.  The student with the most cards wins the game.

I hope some of this is helpful!   8)

here are some materials i've made for this:

Blazing pens game, to go with p. 34-35 - there are 12 questions here, so if you play in groups of 4 like i do then each person should get the chance to write 3 times on the whiteboard. Explain to the students that when a word is highlighted in red that it has been scrambled up in addition to the sentence being scrambled up.

Rock-paper-scissors reading game to go with 'Reading all around us' in Period 4 (p. 32), and a brief powerpoint introducing how to play. Print out the PPT slides with 1 slide per page and laminate them, or place them in plastic coverings at least. I've also attached a Word doc explaining how the game works if you're not familiar with it.

a 'Battlestores' game I made, which is played exactly like Battleships. This is to help them practice the expression: "The __________ is on the _______ floor", e.g., "the bakery is on the fifth floor". Also attached a PPT explaining how the game is played.

Finally, a PPT to practice the 'Speak Aloud' portion on p. 29. We did a role play afterwards in class.

Here's an uno game using the expressions for this lesson! I'll also include a simple ppt explaining how to play in case your kids don't know but basically everytime they put down a card they have to say the expression on the card.

Here is a sudoku game for writing practice (period 5?). It was uploaded by user "barbui" on a different thread. All I did was replace the words to match this chapter.

Here's my contribution for lesson 2. Be sure to check this post every now & again as I'll be editing it if/when I make more ppt's for the later parts of the lesson.

Slap game: Divide the class into two teams, 2 students come up to the front and have their back facing the TV screen with fly swatters. My co-teacher holds up a flash card and everyone says "Where is the _______?" I answer "It's on the ____ floor." Both students then turn around & the first person to slap the correct floor on the TV using the fly swatter gets a point for their team. (Ideal for the first period)

Car Race game: Bomb style game but instead of points you click the car to move it along the race track. (Ideal for the third period)

Sleeping Elephants game: Instructions included on the PPT, I always play sleeping elephants as a reading game but it can easily be used as a writing game too. (Ideal for the fourth or fifth period)

Pokemon Telepathy game: Instructions included on the PPT. (Ideal for the fifth period)

Just a writing worksheet with lesson 2 key words and sentences.

before the worksheet activity, I will review the keywords and sentence with them via listen and repeat for speaking practice. Then more speaking practice in the bingo section.

Along with a bingo for kids to fill in with key words. Then have the students say a word and all students that wrote that word in their bingo can cross off. The first student to cross off all words in their bingo wins.

To practice Ordinals I did the HORSE RACE

Have students guess the final order of the horse race, then award points for correct guesses.

Students loved it.

I edited it before I used it so make sure you are familiar with the ppt (as you should with all things you download from here)

Here's the ordinals car racing PPT I downloaded from waygook.
I updated the results slides to show which places all the cars placed, and created this accompanying worksheet.

Before each round, I had the kids write the ordinal numbers next to the colors. After each round, my co teacher rewarded those with the highest number of correct guesses with a stamp. This game was quite popular and actually got all the kids to spell out ordinal numbers without complaint.
