BBC Sherlock Murder Mystery
« on: March 11, 2015, 03:52:45 PM »
My students are taking the national exams today so I decided to make a game for after midterms (more than a month away I know but I'm bored) so since I work at an all girls high school and they love BBC Sherlock I figured I'd give it a go. the goal will be to practice giving opinions (by accusing the murderer) I got the mystery from this website: http://www.englishadvantage.info/worksheet/murder-of-a-millionaire/

Some of the screen caps are not of the highest quality but I did what I could. I haven't watched the show in a long time but I tried to get in some references to the show that I hope the students who do watch it will enjoy. But, if anyone has a way to improve it I'll certainly be happy to hear it.

I've also made a quick worksheet for the students to keep track of the suspects and alibis(I'll explain what those mean of course). Ideally we'll have time after playing and I'm hoping to make a giant clue board for them to get more practice giving opinions. Using characters from Sherlock instead of the standard ones of course. When I have time to make that I'll upload it here.

Hopefully the ppt isn't too cheesy, if anyone has suggestions I'd be happy to hear them. It also has the opening song/credits video in it and lots of pictures so if anyone has trouble downloading I can delete the video and reupload, just let me know.

Edit: Second comment has the PPT without the video if anyone wants it!

Hello!

I really love the sound of this as I enjoy using the odd murder mystery in class to improve thinking outside the box etc however as you mentioned I'm having problems getting the file to work. Most of the time it won't download, and the one time I did manage to get the ppt file it says that some content is missing or it won't load.

Could you try to reupload without the video? Not sure if that's the cause but it may help.
Thanks for this too!

Ok, so I've deleted the slide with the video and attached it to this comment. If it still doesn't work I can upload it to dropbox.

I just did this for the first time and I gave a few pauses during the class to let the students discuss the clues and who they thought was the murderer at that point. The first I did after Sarah's testimonial. The second was after the blue fabric. Both can be as brief or long as necessary. After the second break I asked them who they thought was the murderer. I give points in my class so I wrote down who they thought was the murder at that point and at the end I gave the teams who were right the first time a few extra points. You could pause again after the hidden door, western wall thing briefly because quite a few of my students needed some time to digest that and ask for clarification. But, I think the first 2 are good to break up the who is cheating/in love with who since it's a bit complicated! After letting them talk for a minute or 2 I went back through the clues very briefly in case they forgot any. Then at the the end I let them give the opinions of their groups and then we saw who was the murderer. I think it went pretty well and the students seemed to enjoy it.
