This is a thread for any lesson material for YBM (2009-2013) Middle School English 3 Lesson 7: English Expressions from Greek Myths. Please share your contributions here. Be sure to explain exactly what you are posting and please do not post multi-level materials in this thread. I started my lesson by going over the textbook. Then went over opinions/for and against/agree and disagree.
I then talked about Gods and Goddesses, Greek Mythology and Mythical creatures. I had them guess the names of the Greek Gods/Goddesses, as well as, the creatures. They did surprisingly well and seemed to really like this chapter.
I ran out of time and ended up cutting the story of creation bit with Kronos and his wife, but the slides are still attached. There's also a draw your own God/Goddess/Mythical creature activity at the end of the second PPT.

For the second class, I went over my favorite myths/Gods. Included are the stories of Achilles, The Trojan War, Midas, Pandora, Theseus and the Minotaur and a few others.

English Expressions that I talked about in class:
Achilles Heel
Midas Touch
Pandora's Box
Herculean Task
Cupid's Arrow
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth
Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.

A lot of the information I adapted from PPTs on waygook about camps and after school classes so there should be more than enough material. Enjoy!

Last week, I used a worksheet about opinions, found here (Thanks for perpetualjoy).

This week, I am going to do a little storytelling with castower's "My Favorite Myths" PPT, then I plan on mixing a little Mythology with a review of the lesson. I've made a "Shuffle Cups" game PPT. Students are asked to give their opinions, or some "What is the meaning of Achilles' Heel?" type of questions.

Due to time constraints, I had to teach all of lesson 7's listen and speak in one lesson -_- so this is just a bare ppt but hopefully its useful to someone.

Focuses on key expressions:

"Would you say that again, please?"
"In my opinion..."

I have a 'remember' slide because I used the same icon to teach opinions in a previous class. they didn't remember.

I updated my "My Favorite Myths" powerpoint. The old one was really wordy and hard for the kids to follow/ stay engaged. So I added some better pictures/ gifs, deleted some overly descriptive sentences, updated the links and just made it look better.

I also found these worksheets that go along with the "Create a Greek God/ Goddess" Activity. It's two pages that I printed double-sided.

So, I'm seeing this waaaay late because I don't get notifications. I'm sure you figured it out, but for future reference: it's just a standard Connect 4 game.

Students say the English expressions and you click the bottom corresponding square. It's a one-on-one game so pretty impossible to play with the entire class unless you print out the last slide (1 page per 2 Ss) and hand out "markers" for the kids. First student to get 4 in a row, wins.
