2015 Grade 5 Cheonjae 3 - 3. Whose Rocket is This?
« on: March 31, 2015, 01:59:47 AM »
Lesson 3-1
Introduction lesson covering Key Words and Expressions in both English and Korean.
Worksheet to go along with the ppt.

Lesson 3-2
Disappearing dialogue for memorization practice. (from Look & Say)

Lesson 3-3
Basking Robbins 31 Game. Students can read either 1, 2, or 3 boxes. Whoever reads box 31 loses.

Lesson 3-4
Easy Word Lotto Game. Students write down 3 words and get points for each word that remains at the end of each round.

Lesson 3-5
Comic Scramble activity. Each pair/group of students gets one blank comic and a bunch of cut up dialogue. They have to put the dialogue in order, and then glue it onto the speech bubbles on the comic. I printed it out in black and white, and if a team finished quickly, they could color in the comic themselves. The comic script isn't scrambled. You just have to print it out and maybe cut each sentence in half (or more if your students are smart). I put them in envelopes to keep them organized.

Lesson 3-6
Spongebob Bomb game for review. I put in a few questions from Lesson 1 and 2 as well. You can get the required font here: http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,22140.0.html

Crazy Circle Game - Easy Speaking game using cards from back of book. Students form a circle with chairs. Students choose 4 out of the 6 cards. 1 student stands in the middle and holds up a card and says "Whose umbrealla is this?" All students who also have that card stand up and say "it's mine" When the teacher says "go" all those standing must change chairs. The student who was in the center also tries to get a chair. There will be one student with no chair and the game begins again.

Here is a land game. Instructions are in the attachment. Students will play in pairs.

I wanted to laminate the board and use different colour markers since there is stealing and losing squares involved but my co. said our school has no markers for this purpose. (Boo)
We decided to use the good old pencil and eraser. Haha!

I thought the kids might be unclear when to use Whose __ is this? vs. Whose __ are those?  So I made a ppt to show the difference more explicitly.  It will take teacher explaining a bit with the powerpoint, so look through it ask the right questions/explain before something comes up.  My students are pretty low level, so it's simple.  Also, I put student's names in the ppt, so change them to your students' names.

Here's a full lesson plan for teaching the key sentences, possessives + this, these, that, those. This is a great lesson for teaching possessives. Play the song enough times and you'll be hearing it in the hallway for weeks! I can only take credit for the PPTs, the song is from Youtube and the worksheet was made by a previous CT of mine.

NB: By demonstrate I mean use hand gestures, actions  and props (e.g. 'his' - point to a male student, 'hers' point to a female student, etc.). First 20 mins are mostly drilling and repetition. Final 20 mins are the video and worksheet.

  • Start with showing the video and asking "what sentences did you hear?"
  • Elicit all the sentences from the video and demonstrate the meaning of each one.
  • Go through Intro Grammar PPT, again demonstrating the meaning (ask Ss to translate, if they can't then ask CT).
  • Practice 'this, these, that, those' by pointing at objects close by and far away while Ss say the correct word.
  • Hand out worksheet. Play video x2-3 times. Ss fill in worksheet.
  • When most Ss are finished encourage singing.
  • Check the answers. Have a Korean explanation of the grammar points by CT if possible.
  • Glue worksheets in textbook/notebook.
  • Sing the song. Gradually increase the speed of the video.
  • Practice 'this, these, that, those' one more time if needed.

Enjoy! :)

Here are my materials for this lesson.
3-3
For this lesson, I focused on the se pronunciation because this was a problem in most of my classes.

3-5
I really hated the story in the book and I found the story another teacher had made for the old book here http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,31972.msg249690.html#msg249690. I made the story about Finn and Jake instead of the teacher for obvious reasons. I also took the create your own role play from the same thread. I'm planning on having the students make comics of their role plays for the test part of the book.

Tactical Tic-Tac-Toe Game Boards

This is pair practice activity. Student A asks the question to choose the row, Student B answers to choose the column and then sticks their mark at the intersection of the two. Three-in-a-row wins. There are three gameboards of increasing complexity. The first deals only with singular. The second adds plurals. The final adds mine/yours to round off the target language.

I created this memory game/ tic tac toe PPT - the class reads the slides first and then they have to try and remember whose boat it is, etc (You can change the items accordingly) then , separate the class in 2 and play tic tac toe on the board - for every item that they can correctly pair with the correct owner as seen in the reading slides they earn a turn at putting a X or O on the tic tac toe grid.
See link for lesson details, download and preview:http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/05/whose-boat-is-this-tic-tac-toe-speaking.html
^^
Also included at the same link is a free comic book download . It's a nice review to have the student make sentences - I demo on the board first and then they do it. Phrases include "Whose ____ is this?" "it's mine!" etc. Changes up to you as it's blank.

Whose is this? Target practice game - paper airplanes. Scroll down in blog to Grade 5 lesson on possessives. http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/04/target-practice-flying-airplanes-for-esl.html

Also, last year for the English festival I wrote a Cinderella script for the Whose is this lesson. you could print a script for all and have them act it out as a class.  :undecided:
http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/06/english-festival-scripts-and-powerpoint.html?q=whose

Happy teaching!

Finally decided I should stop being selfish and actually share the stuff I make for my lessons. So here's the first installment.

All PPTs use the Handfish White font which is available on here...somewhere.

Lesson 1&2 Worksheets Fill in the missing words, crossword and wordsearch. Lesson 1 worksheet has a blank second page I can't work out how to get rid of, sorry :S

Snap Card game -similar to Halli Galli. Concentrates on possessive pronouns. Instructions in the (rudimentary) PPT. If you're better at powerpoint than I am, feel free to give it a tidy if you're that way inclined.

Shakespeare and Disappearing Dialogue PPT - introduction to Shakespeare with some more advanced English, but the pictures get the message across. Disappearing Dialogue to help the students memorise the dialogue. I then get the kids into groups of 3 and they perform in front of the class, so there's a page with the full dialogue on it for reference.

Maybe this too for spy game?  My stuff is swiped off the computers in a hurry.  (I'm like a thief in the night.)

So, my stuff is disorganized.
