Lesson 7-1
Introduction lesson covering Key Words and Expressions in both English and Korean. Ppt and worksheet.

Lesson 7-2
What's missing game covering basic descriptions (hair color, eye color, hair length, hair style). I've found that review the words for what's on the slide first helps them answer faster (or level the playing field for lower level students.
Also, added Disappearing Dialogue retroactively. =]

Lesson 7-3
Guess Who game. Students have to secretly pick one person on the board. They then make sentences about that person while their partner guesses.

Lesson 7-5
Drawing Activity. Each student draws a person and keeps it a secret. Then, they have to talk to each other and try to draw their partner's person. Compare afterwards for much hilarity! I wrote target language on the board to help (big/small, short/long, eye/hair color, nose, mouth).
*Note: I just realized I used a custom font on the worksheet. You may want to change it so it looks pretty.*

Lesson 7-6
Super Mario Review Game.

We used this game in part 1 of this lesson. I just called it the stand up game. (Rather boring I know) Ss loved it.  ;D

The class will be divided into 3 teams.
Each team will pick a number when it’s their turn. (I just let them shout out the number and then I click the number I hear.)
All students will read the sentence on the screen. If the sentence is about a student that student should stand up. For every student that stands that team will get as many points.
The team with the most points in the end is the winner.

Some of the games and activities I've used for other textbooks but will adjust to this textbook - not far off at all.

Hope these activities help you also:

Kooky Characters Guess Who game = links to other websites, you can play an online guess who game with your class. The Hasbro website lets you print out the guess who PDFs for free. http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/05/what-does-he-look-like-kooky-creatures.html

A chant and new vocab PPT - sometimes the students know most of the descriptors already, so I like to add some more interesting vocab: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/05/what-does-she-look-like-describing.html

Face Race and Bingo Game - the students use a dice and race to finish making a complete face first. Then a bingo. http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2015/05/what-does-she-look-like-quick-lesson.html

Dress up your students PPT - huge hit with my classes, just need to get their photos from admin to make this one, or take their photos, if you have time: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/10/crazy-dress-up-powerpoint-activity-what.html

Easy drawing game that worked really well! http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/10/easy-drawing-game-reviewguessing-game.html

And finally, a class project - borrowed the Snow White theme "mirror Mirror, on the wall" and made it a drawing and writing worksheet - download here: http://mrsbaiasclassroom.blogspot.kr/2014/10/mirror-mirror-on-wall-worksheet-and.html

happy Teaching! ;D

This is a writing game we played in part 4 of this lesson.

A huge thanks goes out to the original poster. I adapted it slightly.

I deleted the personal pics I used. My kids loved seeing me with a face mask...Haha!

Students will write out 2 or 3 sentences on the strips of paper given to them.
I numbered the students in their teams and allocated sentences according to their numbers. Eg. 1 - ab / 2 - cd / 3 – ef / 4 – gh.
Number 1 would collect the sentences and shuffle them face down and then redistribute the sentences to their team members. When I said go they could turn the sentences over.
Students must  then arrange them according to the order on each slide. When they are finished, they must put their hands on their heads. The first group to finish will  read out their sentences and will get a point.
Number 2 collects the strips, shuffles and redistributes. And on to the next slide...

Hope you enjoy this as much as we have.

Some old stuff I used last year for "she has long straight hair" and some things from the previous NET.  Just adapt to fit this lesson.

basic look and listen worksheet but I changed some words.

I thought they might enjoy a little change from the listen and fill in.

Students first watch the video.  Then, students listen and circle the incorrect words. Third time, students listen and write in the correct words.

Just a heads up, the Lucky Wheel game doesn't work on Powerpoint 2010 (the wheel won't spin).  I learned this the hard way last year and it made me sad as this was one of my favorite templates.

A large component of this chapter is clothing (a welcome change from the usual fixation on eye size) so I have to ask: does anyone happen to have a clothing styled Guess Who board lying around with full body images on white backgrounds? Or just a zip file of appropriate cartoon images in their collection such that I can slap the board together myself?

I've spotted a couple of great ones on ESL Printables, but the coloured backgrounds on them might bankrupt this school if I dare to print/ensleeve a whole class set (hah).

Man, I never thought we'd be at a loss for Guess Who boards on this forums. XD

Edit: Nevermind, just discovered Buddypoke. Uploaded a clothing-centric, light-on-ink one below.

Guess_Who

Print double sided. The ss go around the class and have up to three games of guess who each side. One side in guys, the other side is gals.

When they win a game, they write the name of the character in the 'Name 1', 'name 2' etc.. First person to get all 6 names on 2 sides gets whatever you decide is a prize. Points etc.

I made a story for this lesson, because, yet again, I didn't like the story in the book. The worksheet was modified from Inge1415's Thor  story worksheet from lesson 6, which was just fantastic work.

Credit to the person who came up with the drawing activity.  I added a writing sheet and another option with a full body.

1.  Students write about what someone (he/she) looks like.
Face Photo:  Limited to hair color and length, eye color or size, glasses or not.
Example:  She has short brown hair.

Body Photo:  More options for using key dialogue.
Example:  He is wearing green pants.

2. Students draw the picture using the sentence they wrote.
Life is good!

Speaking class

Practice (10)
  • Before class draw a T-chart on the board. On one side write “He/She has…” and on the other side write “He/She is wearing…”
  • Before class draw different features on different pieces of paper and label them (i.e. draw a head without facial features - only blonde hair. write “blonde hair” next to the head)
  • Fold it so the students can only see the picture and not the label
  • Hold up the paper and ask the students what the feature is. Then ask which column it goes into (“Is it ‘He is wearing white hair’ or ‘He has white hair’?”)
  • When they respond, unfold the paper and use a magnet to put it in the correct column.
  • Students should repeat two sentences after every categorized feature for practice (i.e. “He has blue eyes.” / “She has blue eyes.”).
  • These visuals will help the students with the next two activities in class.

Circle game (15)
  • Students should be sitting with their chairs in a circle (There should be one chair than number of students - I usually start in the middle and then after I sit down remove the chair that I’m sitting in.)
  • Each student has a picture of a different person (You will need to print these in color - I laminated mine because they get worn out fast with the kids handling them haha)
The person in the middle of the circle says something about their person (i.e. “She is wearing glasses.”)
  • Everyone who has a person that is wearing glasses should stand up and switch seats. The person without a seat says something else about their person (i.e. “She has curly hair”) and all the curly hair people switch spots and so on.
  • To switch it up have them pass their cards to the person on their left.
  • You will need to remind them of a couple rules (This game can get too crazy if you aren’t watching them carefully - but they loooove it) 1. No fighting for a spot (if it happens we stop the game.) 2. No talking while the person in the middle is talking.

Drawing a monster (15) - This game worked surprisingly well
  • Using the worksheet provided, students should first draw their monster and write about it (i.e. My monster has one big eye. My monster has four arms. My monster is wearing a bowtie. Etc.)
  • Then the students should flip their paper over and their partner should describe their monster while the other partner draws it.
  • They switch and do this for the other person’s monster. At the end they see how different the two monsters look.

Reading and Stations (Writing) class

Reading class

Reading race (10)
  • In partners, one student starts with their finger on “A,” one with their finger on “B.”
  • They race around the board reading each box until they meet in the middle
  • They do rock paper scissors and the winner keeps reading from that box while the loser goes back to their start.
  • Again, when they meet in the middle they do RPS again, until one of them makes it to the other person’s start.

Jigsaw activity - guessing celebrities (THIS ACTIVITY WAS AWESOME!! Most engaged I've seen my kids in a while.) (25)
  • I used someone else's celebrity guess who boards for this activity (thank you, stranger!!); print both sheets in color, put back to back and then laminate them; key is on the second page of the jigsaw wkst
  • Students start in groups of 4, each person has their own specific clue sheet.
  • Ss take turn reading clue #1 on their sheet. The use those 4 clues to guess the celebrity (within the minute provided)
  • When they decide on a celebrity, they write their name on their whiteboard, and when the teacher counts down from 10, they show their boards
  • If they are correct, they get a point. I kept score but not one class asked for stamps or anything as a reward. The game was so fun that that in and of itself was the reward  ;D

Writing/Stations class (This will take only about 20 mins, you will have to find another activity to fill the rest of the time.)

The 4th or 5th class of each lesson is my "Stations" class. In their end of the year survey last year, my students said they felt the least confident in writing. The stations heavily rely on writing. I really like stations because they get the kids up and moving, and also allow students to complete the activities at their own pace.

Students complete the stations individually. They are given a creative project at the end of stations so that the high level students that finish quickly can work on something instead of bothering the other students.

Print 3 of each station materials (besides station 1) and post them in one corner/area of a room designated "Station #"

  • Station 1: translate vocab
  • Station 2: Use clues (slides 2, 3) to find the correct person (slide 4)
  • Station 3: Use a Simpsons character (from slide 5) and write about their description

PERIOD 1: LISTENING

decided to just break down what my lesson plan is for period 1.
LESSON PLAN ATTACHED

1- (3') Hello, ask basic questions, elicit answers.  (I'm using the weather and date right now)

2- (10') Introduction ppt.  adapted from another one in this thread, feel free to change the pictures and make them really funny!  I switched out a lot of my photos that I had in there but I think there are still a few of me so feel free to switch them out.
 PPT ATTACHED

3- (10')Book + keywords worksheet (keywords worksheet from ascheer at beginning of thread)

4- (15-17')  Drawing game!
BIG hit.  pass out the drawing worksheet (I give one whole worksheet to each student)
they have to draw what I say! but....I get a LITTLE creative....  I use sentences like "He has 3 BIG green eyes!"  "He has 6 purple mouths!"  At the end, i let them show eachother. They think it is HILARIOUS.
the 2nd round is up to you. If they are higher level, I have them play with their partner. they describe, their partner has to draw.  if they are lower level, you can either say it to them again, or choose one student at a time to choose a suggestion.

PERIOD 2: LISTENING/SPEAKING
LESSON PLAN ATTACHED

1- (3')  Say "wassuuuppppp" ask students how they are, ask them to describe you. "Am I tall or short?"

2- (7') Warm up! Students open their notebooks. you will show and say a sentence, they draw it! at the end they guess who the character is My coT is making her own ppt but I attached one I really like (but will be using in spy camp) so you don't have to make one!  Characters like shrek, elsa, etc. Named "Behind the card"
PPT ATTACHED

3- (10') book. we breeze through this section. Basic show the video, ask and elicit, they practice some dialogue and then it is finished. ^^

4- (15-17') Guess who game!  I used the How to ppt from the first post and Paul's board (thanks Paul!). Just print out, laminate, and play!

PERIOD 3: SPEAKING/READING
LESSON PLAN ATTACHED

1- (3') Say howdy. ask students to describe their partner.

2- (7') Review ppt + extra words!  Edited the ppt so it will go over some new words we will use in BINGO later. Easy quizzing!
PPT ATTACHED

3- (15') Book: This takes longer today because after they finish the writing section, students put their hands on their head to signal a teacher and we check their writing. my students are used to this style and it works great! But then, my 5th graders LOVE english so they like everything...some even ask my for homework. Crazy children.

4- (15') BINGO and book game! Bingo cards are from Mrsbaiasclassroom (posted above). I laminate each card.  This game is listening and reading.  Great practice!
IF it goes quickly, do the in book class game from this period (my coteacher said it was good ^^) OR....never have I ever! Group game. they hold up five fingers and make a sentence that does NOT describe them but describes someone else in the group. If someone says a sentence that describes them, they put a finger down.  GREAT for creative thinking and speaking!

PERIOD 4: READING/WRITING
LESSON PLAN ATTACHED

PREPREP: In first or second period...ask for volunteers (I ask for 7.)  Take their picture and give them a stamp.  let them know their picture will be used in class but don't say why! (I let them know about the picture because some girls hate pictures...and I try and choose confident students) Do this in first or second so that by 4th period, they have already forgotten about the picture ^^  It's a bigger surprise then!

1- (3')  Say G'day. Point to a student and ask questions like "What is He/she wearing? Do they have ______ hair?"

2- (10')  From MrsBaiasclassroom, a BIG hit...warm up review using the students own pictures!  First they see their picture, and then I have funny hair/eyes/nose appear on the picture. students LOVE this SOOOO much!  They have to make sentences and describe the student.

3- (15')  Book. nagain, this period takes longer because we go around and check each students writing. if you do that with your coteacher it goes faster.  It has really helped my students and they behave very well when they are finished.

4- (10-13')  Read and Color!  I made this worksheet ^^
It is a quiet but fun activity. Students will get a worksheet (I have 4 different ones with 4 different sets of characters...adventure time, my little pony, fairly oddparents, spongebob).  Each sheet has 3 characters and a story about them and what they look like. Students read the story and color the character correctly!  I usually give each student in the group of 4 a different worksheet.   They like to show each other the worksheet and the characters ^^
