Intro PPT

Slide 6 is a map of NYC, just to give them a real life example of blocks, go straight, turn right, etc.

Here is a great song to teach left and right, maybe for the first lesson.

PD4

I started with the Let's Read routine that lasted like 5 mins max. Then, I introduced the game for like 5 mins. The game itself was about 20-25 mins. I ended with Read & Do,and one time (a class blew through it so quickly) we worked on the next chapter read and write. I had a crossword search as back up.

The game is a simple TPR. My classes were five groups of 5 or 4. Students start by playing RPS to find the order of their line. Each table + the teacher desk was a place(market, library, bus stop, gift shop, museum, park). There are two ways to start on either side of the class(red or blue). One group at a time, he first student gets blindfolded (I had a kakashi sleeping mask)and lead by the student after. Students must use phrases "Go straight,Turn left (or right), It's on your (or right),". The activity has a time limit of 6 per group ,but the longest a student took was 4 1/2 mins. Since I was using a classroom timer from online, the team with the most time left over wins.

This game requires participation from both teachers. My CT didn't understand the game at first, but after using a team to model on the first period, he helped me onward.

period 1 listening activity. students get map. listen to teachers directions and write in the name of the place on their map. the ppt matches the listening WS and has the answers on the last slide

period 4/5 WS is a fill in the blank that goes along with the read and play on page 163.

I threw this together today. Students create a map to their own homes and then present to the class.

Games I used for this chapter (all borrowed)

The "Find Mercy" game is a variation on the "mario directions game" using Overwatch characters. One student goes outside while everyone receives a character. They'll answer according to their loyalties. Some students will lie and some will help to find the student with the "Mercy" card using directions such as "go straight two blocks (desk spaces) and turn left". The student has 1 minute to find Mercy. I've also done this game by giving students smiles or frown cards (for liars and helpers) and one student the "library" or "pet shop" card instead of "Mercy" so they'll ask "Excuse me, where is the library?" instead of "where is Mercy?"

Thank you to those who shared their materials here.

Period 2: I took soggysocks' intro material and adapted it to some more direction review. In the same period, I had my students do blind mazes as the main activity. I taught them additional vocabulary -- stop and go back.

As for prep, print out the six various maps and the flashcards (last slide). You want to cut the flashcards and put them in a bag for each group to pick out of.

Period 3: I used wstewy17's place your bets ppt and adapted it as a review. My main game for the period was a decoding game, which was a complete success!

As for prep, print the hand outs, and print and laminate location cards. I have 30 students per class so I printed and laminated 5 sets. If some kids are absent, I subtracted some cards. Make sure to inform the class how many people are expected for each group.

Enjoy!

During the project period, I played two games -- Guess the picture and place your bets game.

Guess the picture: Show a little bit of the picture at a time. Students can guess what the picture is by using the key expression -- Where is the _____? When it's correct, then ask someone to give you directions to the place on the next slide map.

Place your bets game: Print the pdf for the handout. Directions to the game are provided in the PPT. The game was a hit!
