(대교 Daegyo) Grade 4, Lesson 4 - "Shake Your Head"
« on: April 18, 2011, 08:39:44 am »
Here is a small powerpoint of the Hokey-Pokey song I used with my 4th graders. I actually brought my guitar to school and played the song. I thought it was a great way to introduce the body part key words for the chapter.

If you haven't heard the song before check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDmCSvqhhoI

These aren't much, but I think we're all sort of stressed with mid-terms on the horizon. So here is what little contribution I have.

It's just a simple memory game, to get them pumped/motivated, most of the kids will already know the body parts, but you can review using the game.

Then I made a very simple pass the pencil case game, emphasizing "are you okay?" and "No, my ~ hurts" - I left out the "I'm not," because it seems largely...superfluo us, and maybe not crucial to midterm or finals. Idea is to have the class ask the student who gets the pencil case/whatever "are you okay," and the student answers accordingly. Of course. ^^

Haven't tried any of these out yet, but they're usually well-received with the kids. The memory will be my first time trying with 4ths, so this really will be an experiment, hope it works well for any who try as well.

Anyway, hope this is all somewhat helpful. And, as always, cheers to Rufus for making initial contributions.

I'm glad the video helped. I wasn't sure what to post along with my power point. I knew it wasn't much, but something to get this chapter going!

for those interested; I found that playing The Hokey Pokey with a G chord and D chord to work best with my voice. The tabs area little different on the net.

Grade 4 Lesson 4 Shake your head
« Reply #4 on: April 20, 2011, 11:09:53 pm »
Here is what I made tonight for lesson 4 period 1. For the monsters race game, I used the layout of a game that someone made. I'm so sorry, I don't remember who, but thank you so much for it. The PPTs are very simple. They are just quick preview and review for the kids.

By the way, please do check for any mistakes, as I'm sure there'll be some since I just finished and it's like 12am.

Here's a song that uses the key expression "Shake your ______" .  You could probably just replace the word booty with any body part of the chapter and have the kids dance along. I kept thinking this every time we practiced this key sentence.

Shake your booty! hahaha

My lesson plan for 1st period of this lesson:

First I am going to get the kid's warmed up by playing this video.  It gets fast at the end, so they will end laughing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JNfrNHIgXw&feature=related

We are then going to do the book fun talk, listen and repeat and the goalie game for 8 minutes or so in pairs.

I am then going to play Simon Says with the class.  I am going to start with, "touch your _______" If that is too easy for them, I will move on to "Shake your head, point your finger, etc."

For period two, three and four I have some game Ideas I took from Genki English and Dave's ESL:

1. Mummy Game.  If you ask the students to bring in a roll of TP before hand, at least half will remember.  So you pair up the students.  One will be the Doctor and one will be the patient.  The doctor will say, "Are you okay?" and the patient should reply, "No, I'm not.  My _____ hurts."  The doctor will then wrap up that body part.  You should be walking around the whole time to make sure they are using the Target language.  If you hear them using Korean or not speaking and just wrapping, they will have to unwrap a body part and start over.  The team that has the best "mummy" at the end of the time allotted is the winner.

2. Dice game.  Assign a body part to number 1-6.  On the board make a head and torso for each team. Ask each team a question.  If they get the question right, they can roll the dice and then draw the corresponding body part on their person.  They can only roll the dice one time, so if they get the same body part they cannot draw anything.  The team that completes their person, or if time runs out the team that has the most body parts drawn, is the winner.

3.  Run and slap or Run and draw.  Divide the class into two teams.  Assign a number to each person so that one person on each team has the same number.  Then say a body part and a number.  The first person from that team to slap the body part on the picture you drew on the board, or draw the body part on the board, gets a point for their team.

hey,
I began this lesson with several small videos.  Most of my classes loved them.  Very basic TPR activities. :D

Here is another short video that not only reviews some of the past target language:
-Hi
-My name is.....
-Nice to meet you
-See you
But it also goes at a fairly slow pace for lower level students.

Here's a simple worksheet that I made.  Feel free to modify it.

I apologize for not putting any instructions on the worksheet. I like to explain things out loud in class so my kids will get more practice listening. Plus their vocabulary is limited so they probably couldnt read the instructions anyway.

The first part involves having the kids read and complete sentences using one of the key expressions from the chapter.

The next section asks the student to connect the words with the parts of the face.
The section below that has the kids write the words (paying attention to plurals) and then draw a face.

The final section is dialogue practice. I like to make my kids write so I make them write the dialogue too.

again feel free to modify the worksheet.

thanks!

For lesson 3 I incorporated a writing activity. If your school has enough whiteboards for each student that would be ideal, but you could also do this activity on scratch paper. I had all students put their hands in the air as I wrote one word (head, leg, arm, shoulder, hand, foot) on the teacher white board. I wrote the word REALLY big. Then when I finished writing the word I rang a bell and told the students they could start writing the word as many times as they could on their personal white boards. As they are writing I was slowly erasing the word on the teacher board. You can vary the speed that you erase the word depending on the number of letters in the word. Then when I finished erasing the word I rang the bell and had all students put their hands up and stop writing. Then they counted how many times they wrote the word and wrote that number on their board.

You could award points to teams by saying that if any member at their table writes the word 20 times they will get a point for each person who wrote it 20 times. OR if you have a chalkboard you could write the word in water and then use a fan or wave paper in front of the word until it disappears.
