Terrible chapter and one that makes me hate my job. Of all the things they could be learning it's "Do you know the kimchi?"
I'll show this as an attention-getter. Two Kpop idols go to a foreign country where no one knows them and they walk around asking "Do you know ___?"

Halloween telepathy game. Thank you to the original creator of this template.
Download all music and put into same folder as the ppt for everything to run smoothly.

Period 2 - Found a Simpsons "shoots & ladders" type game and modified it to fit this chapter and book.
Period 4 - Modified the stations activity and added an answers slide.
Thanks to all the original creators. ^_^

This chapter is pretty boring so I made a PowerPoint to have students guess where different things came from around the world. Students will first see a picture and guess what it is, after that they guess where it is from. Some of the countries I chose could be argued (for example, I said that henna is from India even though there are other countries that use it and I said croissants were French not Austrian). Feel free to change it or add on any other things you can think of-my main goal was to make it so that students can practice words like Japanese, Chinese, etc.

Got the idea of a word search from someone else, but added the fill-in-the-blank at the bottom. You can turn it into a speaking activity/game if you have two students work together. Whoever finds the word in the word search must fill in the correct sentence below and then recite it out loud. The student who finds the most words is the winner. Ss can mark "their" words with a specific color.

changed Mr. C's a bit. 5 stations. always rotate. 4-4:30 for each station. did for period 5. changed crossword to word search.
also. 2 versions. station 5 is changed. one station 5 is make your own dialogue based on picture and the other station 5 is just copy the sentences. because i teach low levels students, used the latter.
also. obviously. one powerpoint is for you to print and one is the PPT for you to use to explain the activities before you begin. that ppt also has the answers at the end.

period 3.
line block game. edited from a grade 3 thread. changed the words. i was gonna use this as reading, speaking is also applicable. basically, two teams, two colors. rock paper scissors. if you win, you pick a hexagon to color in. then repeat. if you make a line across to the other side, you win.
the printable version has two on a page.
the powerpoint version was used as a demo so they can see how it works.
sparkle is like. warm up reading. one student one word. if you say sparkle, the person next to you must sit down. last person standing wins kind of thing.

I expect everyone's past this lesson now, but here are my things for posterity.
Most applicable, review game using the awesome Three Kingdoms / ancient Korea template from here:
http://www.waygook.org/index.php/topic,80160.0.html
, a perfect fit for this lesson. Please note that some of the questions are based on extensions I taught (explanation below), so check them first. Instructions are brief as we've played this before, so skim the thread if you haven't. Most people play this as strictly a writing game, but I've included reading and speaking questions. Only a few questions are "speed" battles. Template is updated so that question selection is like a bomb game.
Regarding the pedagogy concerns some people had, my take was that this chapter helps students learn to spell and sound out Romanized Korean words. This is not something my students (excepting hagwon veterans) were familiar with. So in period 3, I introduced the Revised Romanization system briefly, and had students practice sounding out Romanized Korean words letter by letter. (Some of my students can scarcely read, so it was a good phonics review, too.) Then in period 5, I made and gave students laminated Romanization charts (I wrote "seonmul" / gift on the board), and we practiced transliterating other Korean words. My students were very interested in this, seemed to like their gift, and many started writing transliterated Korean all over their books. When I asked them why they might want to learn this, they answered without hesitation that they can help foreigners who can't read Korean. The editing Wikipedia slide was just for humor.
If you teach this, you should have your co-teacher explain a few things not covered in the PPTs:
- some better-known words have... let's call them canonical misspellings. kimchi, Hangul, etc. It's like English: memorize or ignore.
- Names are commonly excepted. Koreans often copy a spelling from someone else (meaning an older system), or invent something creative. There's a good chance foreigners learning Korean have been taught this.
- This is a one-way system. (Some of my students did try to reverse it.)
To go along with the period 3 PPT, I revised Sophyra's board game (thanks!) to include bits of other countries' culture. Students won't know all the words, but they should match the picture to the handout, and use phonics to sound them out.
Finally, for the project period, I kept the theme of phonics-for-foreign-words + other cultures going, and had students make posters around a theme. We always struggle to finish projects, so I did a lot of the work. Researched, sized and assembled pictures, typed the words. My students just needed to plug the words into the sentences they know, cut, and paste it all on posters. Still didn't finish in 40 minutes, but your kids might do better, or the media and information could inform other activities. (For the board game and this, slight license taken with a few origins for simplicity, but nothing offensive, I hope. Attempted reasonable diversity.)
Whew. Have fun.

Flick reading speaking game - period 2/3 or 7..... you decide
we played in however many groups - i had tables of 5 go FFA - once you flick, you make a sentence that corresponds to the word. i.e. you land on "minhwa" ---> Do you know about minwha? Yes, it's a traditional Korean painting. then color in the box. different boxes have different point values. add up your colored boxes in the end. -
alternatively, you could have two ppl on a team and have them do the dialogue A. do you know about.........b. yes/no, can you tell me about it. A. It's a traditional ........

Games for this chapter. (borrowed from other threads)
I made the Yutnori game. We played on a regular yutnori board (or I would draw one on the board and use magnets as place markers) as teams and I'd put the PPT up on the screen. The students would make a sentence based on what space they landed on.

Big shoutout to the Great Big Story YouTube channel. They've put out quite a few short 2-4 minute videos about traditional Korean culture, some entirely in Korean with english subtitles, some a mix of both. Definitely look through it for time-fillers or motivation :)) The Gyeonji fishing, Jokgu, and Pansori ones are good.
