Baseball Review Game
« on: July 09, 2015, 11:25:33 AM »
KIA Tigers baseball review game! (I'm from Gwangju, so I made tailored the theme to our local team.) So it's review season, and I thought I'd treat my students to a fresh game they haven't played before. This is a baseball review game I designed with a KIA Tigers theme. Quite a hit with my students! If you've tried my world cup soccer review game, it plays similarly. Just copy/paste your questions for any lesson review into the <question> / <answer> slides. See below for detailed rules:

RULES:

Boys vs Girls. Give a number to each boy and each girl. Have the same numbers stand up (1's to start) and do rock-scissors-paper. The winner can choose a number.

Have all the students of that team ask the question together, then have the boy/girl whose turn it is answer. Then, display the answer and have the team say the answer together. After that, go to the next slide where there will be an event, e.g., move 1 base (click the boy/girl baseball icon and move it to the right place on the board). To remove the baseball player, just click it, then click to the next circle where it belongs.

After the winner is finished his/her turn, the loser of RSP can choose a number. When that's over, have the #2 boy and girl stand up and do RSP. Continue like this.

Each team has a score board, and also a number of OUTs that they can get. When a player gets out, click a circle in the OUT box to make an X. After three outs, that team must go back to home plate, and reset the OUT box. They lose their progress (e.g. they are on second base, they have to go back to home). The OUTs stack, so even if a team scores a point, do not reset the OUTs. This is important for keeping it balanced and so that one team doesn't run away with a win (although the nature of the game is luck of course).

There are some other events too. In the A/B section, the student whose turn it is must choose A or B. There is both an out (swing and miss picture) and a hit (hitting ball picture). The out is self-explanatory, chalk up an OUT to that team. The hit allows the team to advance one base.

There is also a 1/2/3 guessing event. 1 possible outcome is an OUT, another is advance 2 bases, and another is do a rock-scissors-paper with the opposing team--so whichever team's turn it is, e.g. #6 boy, he should do a rock-scissors-paper with #6 girl. If the boy wins, they go to home base and get a point. If the girl wins, the boys get all out--go back to home base, reset the outs and don't get a point.

I hope this makes the rules of the game clear. Once you experiment with the PPT a bit you'll be at home with it in no time.

Have fun--my students enjoyed it very much.

NOTE: To change the contents of the questions, simply edit the questions/answers found on every other slide. Do not erase slides or this will interfere with hyperlinks.

EDIT: New team templates consistently added. Feature graphics, logos, and pictures of corresponding teams.

Current teams:

-KIA Tigers
-LG Twins
-Hanhwa Eagles
-Nexxen Heroes (thanks to Mr C, scroll down to download)

My pleasure! If there's one thing students love more than a PPT review game, it's a fresh PPT review game.  ;D

I really like this, BUT I'm a Heroes fan, and my students (the ones who care about such things) know it.

So I had to switch out the Tigers graphics for the Heroes.

Thanks.

Yep that's the idea, I made the logo graphics very changeable for that reason, so if you're from another city you can easily convert it to your kids' favorite team. Or yours, as it seems to be the case here.

Why not include all teams?

If there are students put into groups, they can decide which team they want.  Hell, perhaps they know some of the cheers or they can make their own English ones to recite before they begin their round.

Make it so that you can interchange between the all the different teams in the league.

Set team number preferences in the beginning and make a running scoreboard for all

That'd be impressive.

Nice work.

Thanks for your comments. As I made this primarily for my students who all live in Gwangju, I think they'd all prefer to be KIA Tigers, so I decided to not make it "choose your own team in the league." Also, if they got into choosing teams that would complicate things, and the heart of this game is its simplicity and fast-paced play.

Regarding groups: if you try the game, I think you'll quickly realize it's not suited to group play. Two teams keeps the pace tight, and there isn't enough time/aren't enough questions to justify groups playing. Also, many groups would be getting bored since the scoring system is different compared to a bomb game and there's pretty much nothing for them to do when it's not their turn. The way it is now, everybody should be speaking every other question and answer. If somebody isn't speaking, don't let them get the event until they do. (help them of course) This is important. After all, the main goal is to review the lessons they've learned.

Re: chants, both teams were chanting KIA Tigers chants in my various classes  ;D  so I think that won't be a problem for them.

Soon I will upload templates for all the various teams in the league. That way everybody can play with their favourite teams.  8)

Update: New LG Twins template added. Features logos and photos specific to the LG Twins.

I'll create/upload more when I have time. Let me know which team you'd like sooner, and I can prioritize accordingly. Cheers.

Hello!

Thank you for this, looks good. I couldn't bring myself to use any of the templates as they were, so I made a Lotte Giants version. I'm sure it could be improved on if anybody feels like it. If not, enjoy!

Regards,

Ian

Nice job. I made the original template clean and simple so that changes like this could be made as you like. A concern I would have about adding too much colour is that it could distract students from the highlights they should be focusing on (numbers on the screen, baseball diamond/players, questions etc.). Also, lower resolution photos stand out more when you keep their original colours (as opposed to modifying them with a particular colour shade) so it would have an overall less "clean" feel to it. But overall the modifications you made succeed in adding colour without distracting too much.
