I showed my 1st graders an introduction to Halloween and then some characters associated with the holiday. Then I show them some examples of character riddles. I hand over paper and colored pencils to the students and let them work in groups of two. Then they will draw out of a bucket a random Halloween character (cut the word document into little stips with the character name on it). I made most of them universal characters that most Korean boys would already know about. If they really don't know, they can pick another. I would have let all the groups choose their own character but I didn't want everybody choosing "zombie." After they draw make sure they don't show anyone what they got and have them create their riddle. When they are finished, have them read their riddles to other groups. See if the characters are able to be guessed. If there is time remaining, have students read their riddles outloud to the class. It may take two 45 mintute periods to finish. My 1st grade boys really dig this one!
