I searched endlessly for a good music lesson to teach my students.
This site does contain several music lessons, ranging from excellent to mediocre, but they lacked the basic elements I wanted for an inspiring music lesson.
Most lessons on this site revolve around showing a pop song, showing the lyrics and talking about the pop song. I have no interest in showing or listening to contrived videos and music with a supposed "political or cultural message" that will liberate the minds of Korean middle school students.
I just want a simple lesson.

In addition to the questions at the end of the lesson, I handed out a musical instrument word search as well. I went around the class student by student, listening to them answer the questions as best as they could in complete sentences.

This lesson is a simple, music 101, introduction to some of the elements of music for middle school students with a few entertaining music clips and vocabulary that build off of each other.

The percussion video serves to simply show percussion instruments and the sounds they produce.

Sure, these are not absolute definitions, but these definitions satisfy these basic musical terms.

It's just disheartening that over 200 people have read and maybe used this lesson, yet only one individual has replied, so I changed the access. It is public once again.

You can do both.
You could teach a song one lesson and teach melody, harmony, etc. another lesson.

I have taught this lesson with my middle school students and they enjoyed it immensely.

I can relate to the Bieber clamoring.

Hey man, I just checked out your lesson and I thought it was great! Unfortunately for me, the general consensus among my students is, "Teacher, Bieber, we want Bieber!" Sigh. If only I could teach something like this (which I find more interesting).

Yeah, I hate when the students want to stay in their own little world.  I also notice that Koreans will like a song and listen to it constantly for about a month or two.   Then they will get tired of it and start listening to another song for about a month or two.

I guess if you want your taste in music to be limited to Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga, you might get along okay in life.   Seems to be a rather unfulfilling way to live though.

I find it interesting that in the Rolling Stones list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, there are 2 songs from the 1940, some songs from the 1950s, a lot of songs from the 1960s, some songs from the 80s and 90s.  But pretty much zero songs from the 2000s.  It's evidence for what I tell students, that the best pop music was in the 1960s (in general, although there was some terrible music too from that time period).  That by limiting themselves to songs that are less than a year old, there is a ton of stuff they are missing.

Having said that though, I would be hard pressed to say which is better, Justin Bieber, or the Monkees?

- Chances are, like in my experience, its ''no'' to all! I realise this is not a representative selection of world-music, it's more a question of global exposure. Whilst everybody in the West and other continents/regions of the world might not like these artists, at least they are aware of them.

Thank you!!!  I looked at it and its great!  I'm thinking about doing a "English through Music" summer camp and would definitely use it.  If yall can think of any ideas/ themes for each day, I would great appreciate it!

Finally tried it in class.   I don't know if you are the player of the classical guitar at the beginning, but if you are, the students requested to hear the part where you play several times.

After class I decided to play for them Beethoven's sixth (just because I claimed to know it off the top of my head, guess the students wanted to see if I was right).

This looks great and I think will work well for me for multiple reasons.  I've been doing a few music lessons---tho I think if I were to do them again I would change the order and maybe start with this one.  Two weeks ago, I did a music judging lesson (on waygook), it would have been great to have done this beforehand.  Last week I taught the students my school's fight song.  I'm gonna give this a shot this week...I'm sure the students will like it a lot.  I've also been interested in giving prezi a try to see how student's like it...and this is a perfect opportunity to do so.  Thanks so much!
