Practical English I- Judy Yin Unit 3
« on: September 25, 2015, 02:32:52 PM »
This is a 50 minute first year high school lesson.  I teach at a commercial high school so it is somewhat low level. Feel free to make adjustments.

Start the class by engaging them with the first 3 powerpoints.

Go over the key words and expressions for the lesson. I have attached a key expressions document where they just write the hangul. I don't normally do this, but this lesson includes a lot of new vocabulary.  There are some slides where the students must apply the expressions with pictures they see.

Then they will use their books.  Page 80 has a written review and questions.  I read the paragraph out loud with them. If you don't have the book, but are just doing a restaurant review lesson there is a picture of the review in the ppt. If you are teaching middle school you can delete it all together to save time.

Then they will watch a clip of Mr. Bean eating at a restaurant and write a review. The questions are provided on the bottom of the worksheet. My students seemed to really enjoy this video.

This lesson uses key expressions from Practical English 1 Judy Yin Unit 3 Theme 3.

The lesson lasts for two 50 minute class periods. You can shorten it by taking out a few example slides or trailers.

First class:
-The first slides go over the four questions answered during a basic movie review and new vocabulary.
-Then we watched trailers for each movie and answered the four questions together as a class. The last trailer is of Frozen. We watch the trailer and the students get a worksheet with the questions and a word bank and must answer the questions on their own. (P.S. when printing the worksheet do front back, Frozen and The Kingsman, you'll use it the next class)  My class is lower level so there wasn't enough time for them to finish and the Frozen worksheet because homework that we went over first thing the next class. HOWEVER, your students may finish it in the same class period and you can go over the answers.

Second Class:
-Either start with the Frozen homework or The Kingsman game.  I took the 4 "answers" to the questions and cut them up and put them in random orders, paper clipped them together, paired the students together (up to you) and had them put them in the right order for a review.  I first explained to the students in a real review is not a question answer format, rather in paragraph form where you put the "answer" information down.  The first team to put them in the right order are the "winners" and then it's just the rest of the class trying to finish theirs.  I walked around the room checking the students progress and orders.  -Then the students will do the other side of the worksheet and write 1,2,3,4 to put them in order again. You go over the answer with the ppt and have the students read a basic review the way it is meant to be written.
- Watch the beginning of the Film UP (the link is provided but it may be taken down before you use it so check first) The first 8ish minutes of the movie tells it's own mini story.  After the students watch the film I have them write their own reviews for the "movie."

Hey! Good stuff, thank you. I'm using this again today. It's simple and straightforward and easily adaptable to any class.

This is for page 63 and 65.

I am uploading a powerpoint about gift giving and a worksheet I will have the students fill out and present to the class in pairs.
