STUDENTS BECOME MATCHMAKERS!
« on: October 11, 2015, 09:27:20 PM »
In an imaginary society at some distant point in the future, all couples will be put together by a committee.

If couples want to get divorced, the committee will have to decide if they dissolve the marriage. If the marriage is to be dissolved, the committee needs to decide how the couples will be redistributed.

In this game, students are introduced to different couples who want to get a divorce. Students need to decide, as a committee, how they will redistribute the couples to make everybody happy again.

Grade Level: High school students and beyond
Number of students: 10-30
Time: 15-20 minutes.
English Level: Upper-Intermediate to Advanced

Attached is the PPT and timer. Make sure the PPT is in the same folder as the timer so that everything will work properly.

This activity was inspired by the book, Discussions that Work.

Have fun! :)

Man. I so wish my students were at a high enough level to make this lesson worth while. Nice job.

Hey fellow Todd!

Thanks for the compliment! I really appreciate it.  Maybe you can save the PPT for when you move to a new job and teach older students! Keep your options open! ;)

Many thanks!

Sincerely,

Todd

I just tried this activity with my second graders in high school (I only had two students for this particular class). I would describe their proficiency as intermediate, at best.

Words that they didn't understand: affair, brat, spoiled, cheating.
...And I have to admit that having to explain these words was a bit awkward at first, but then again, the students weren't/aren't living an entirely sheltered existence.

At first, I thought that the students weren't understanding the activity. They were sort of silent and their eyes were wandering off in different directions, either around the room or  sort of aimlessly doodling on their paper. When I asked them if everything was alright, they reassured me that they were fine.

Eventually, they proved to me that they understood the activity when they provided me with very logical explanations for their decision to dissolve the couples and rearrange them. I was pleasantly surprised, you might say.

My only regret is that I didn't provide a "recap slide," for the students, which would have made it easier for them to check the facts before making their decisions about how to rearrange the couples. I ended up flipping back to the previous slides to refresh the students' memories.

I'm planning on doing this activity again with other second graders, perhaps even high-level first graders.

Hope others are more successful with this activity!

I made another version of this game which is, in my humble opinion, far superior to the original PPT that I posted in this thread.

Probably those of you teaching little kids won't have use for this, but if you're teaching high school or beyond, this PPT is entirely possible.

Hope you like!

Although it's above the level of my middle schoolers, you have made an excellent, high quality presentation! Excellent graphics and animations. I will be incorporating the timer at the end of your presentation into some of my own presentations- that is a great template!

I teach middle school, but I really like the idea of having students making decisions, moving things around and explaining their reasoning for it! You've actually inspired me to do a class like this. It'll be with my 1st graders in a couple weeks (we're covering "should"...again). I think I've added enough hints/clues and limited choices that they'll be able to do it, though! I'm going to have them organize animals in a zoo (certain cages are different sizes, contain water, are close to the picnic area, gift shop, etc...).

So anyway, thanks for the inspiration and ideas!

Very cool, Shostager! Best of luck with your classes.

Just FYI, I'm working on a Zoo lesson myself which I imagine will take about a week or two to complete. Stay on the message boards and keep a look out for it. I promise it will be just as good as this one here! And besides, why work on anything when I can do all of the work for you?

Good luck!

Happy to help. I got the idea for this activity from this book. Not affiliated, it's just a helpful book!

Good luck!

The activity has been going well. I just wanted to attach the work of two of my best students in the second grade (high school). See attached.

They really wrestled with this activity, which sort of amused me.

Curious to know if other people on this message board tried it.

Great for a group discussion! I did this with my higher level 1st graders and it was a success. Some students did not know the meaning of affair, stable, divorce, stingy.. Surprisingly, one group decided they would have Nina & Rachel be roommates and single. Rachel is a teacher and Nina is not a good student lol Thank you for the great work todd!

You are most welcome! Has worked like a charm in most of my classes this year, for the upper-intermediate groups!

Let me know how it goes for you!
