Teen Life: fun, worries, and conformity.
« on: April 21, 2011, 07:52:48 am »
This LP is for intermediate level students. It's a pretty straight-forward lesson, and, by the way it's presented, can generate some good conversation among the students (esp. telling them what you did as a teenager, selectively of course).

In the first part of my lesson I showed them a kind of sentimental, but meaningful Thailand life insurance commercial about an old man cherishing his wife 30 yrs after her death, fulfilling the promises daily that he made to her while she was still alive (I usually pause it before it shows Thai Life insurance, as it might cheapen the effect a bit lol). Then I asked them, "why they wake up in the morning?" Im not leading a philosophy class, but it is important their ideas about what they value is not just solely shadows of what others tell them is important. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ll-bDmK3EA&feature=related

Here is the PPT and worksheet (I got a friend to translate all the eng. subs on the video into Korean)

Yes, I think education in the area of morals/civics/philosophy is very important.  Many of the students, especially out in the rural areas are so innocent and naive, they would believe anything (no matter how preposterous) you tell them.

It makes me sad to see some of them always watching those kpop girl bands and wishing they could look like them and be like them, when in fact, I wish I could tell my students, to me you are are a lot more beautiful in my eyes because you're real.

It reminded me of back home in America how little girls wanted to be like Britney Spears and if they couldn't look like her or act like her, they couldn't be beautiful.  Now look at how ugly (figuratively) Britney Spears is.  All the drugs, parties, rehab, mental problems, divorce, etc.    I hope the students can learn to have individual strength and integrity and not give in to conformity because of what they see on tv or because what everyone else around them is doing.

You can tell them that one thing that is very common on player web sites (web sites that tell men how to pick up hot chicks) is, they will tell men that women that are 9s or 10s have serious self esteem problems.  The common technique, in a nutshell, is to purposefully keep her self esteem low so that she will reach out for something (preferably you) to feel better.  Britney Spears is a good example.

An exaggerated video about how this works (except that the woman is definitely not a 9) is here:

So tell the girls, if they want to attract men like this, try to be beautiful.   If they want to attract good men, they should be genuinely who they are.

I really really really really like this lesson and wish I could use it, but I just can't bring myself to show this video with the grammatical errors that are in the subtitles.  It sucks!  But it reminds me of another Thai commercial about a young poor boy who grows up to be a doctor and helps a shopkeeper that gave him food once.  you've inspired me to make a lesson for that one, similar to this. so good!
