Lesson 10 is back again!

Here's the Intro PPT I'm using for period 1 focusing on "You're taller than me/you/him/her/them/us"
For period 2 I plan on teaching "My hair is longer than mine/yours/his/hers/theirs/ours"

For period 1 I'm also doing a 'Pass the ball' game and watching the Daft Hand's video.  We're going to learn the words and start writing on our hands for Period 2:

2011 Update: Daft Hands in HD
Since there are lots of great activities on this thread (Classroom olympics, line up, Mission), I don't plan on having the students write on their hands.  It's time-consuming.  Instead I'll use sarsabf5's worksheets.

2011 Update #2: Redid the Intro PPT. Added 7 slides on grammar -- How to choose -er worthy words, use possessive pronouns, and compare with THAN.

2011 Update #3: Comparisons - Simple PPT where students guess which is bigger/taller/etc.  Nile vs Amazon, North Korea vs. South Korea, BoA vs. Nickun, Saturn vs. Jupiter, Bugatti vs. SSC, G Dragon vs. Tae Yang, Mouse vs. Chicken, Taipei Tower vs. Shanghai WFC

Here is my ppt for the first period with a bunch of different comparatives.

Also here is a game where the students have to answer the question. Some are easy and some are difficult. I played this as a gambling game - after seeing the question the students were able to bet (up to a limit) points on the answer. If they were right they won that many points and if they were wrong they lost that many points. However, if you don't feel comfortable with gambling in class then I am sure you could use the quiz questions in some other way. This is a rowdy game and enthusiastic game!

Here is also another game I played. I gave each team the sentence cards cut up and they had to make as many valid sentences as possible using the comparitives. This is not a rowdy game.

Here's a bomb game.  They usually go over well for open classes.

Also, I've attached the PPT I used for 2nd period.

lol I wanted to do Daft Hands for English Camp, but chickened out at the end.  I was sure my co-teacher would think it's too fast.  I'm also not sure if other teachers or parents would be very happy with the kids writing on their hands (I had a teacher scold me for that once as a kid).  Have you ever done this before?  If so, how did it go, and do you have any tips for making it work?

The Daft Hands worked out pretty well.  We used the normal markers that every student has.  A few students were reluctant to write on their hands.  My co-teacher told them it washes off easily and you can write in yellow if it makes you feel better.  The other teachers thought the students were crazy, but went along with it.
We didn't focus on learning the hand movements from the video.  It was more about writing on their hands and putting together the words.  n-ev-er, ev-er, ov-er, strong-er, etc...

I cannot take credit for any of this really...

I thought I was maybe going to need to teach this lesson today so combined various bits and pieces from prior discussions and added maybe 1 or 2 original ideas -- so to those who originally came up w/ these slides - Thank You - had I been required to teach 6th grade today, I would have survived :)

Anyway, here they are. I do my ppts on Google Docs...so the video embedding doesn't always work when opened off the desktop - apologies.

I didn't think of the CD worksheet idea, but I'm grateful to whoever did! Uses the comparative words newer, older, and cheaper, so is probably best saved for period 4. Page one has the pictures of CDs with their release date and cost. Page two is a worksheet for students to fill out about the CDs.

Here is the ppt I made for Grade 6 Lesson 10 "I'm Stronger Than You"

It is a trivia game where students compare famous places, animals, and people using the language, "A is bigger/smaller/faster/taller...than B."  I ask the students to say the answer and its opposite.  So, "A is taller than B.  B is shorter than A."

This ppt starts with 3 slides that show how we make comparative sentences with ppt animations ("Jinho is tall" becomes "Jinho is taller than Nami"); then there are 6 slides with an adjective and two pictures that students can compare using the adjective.  You could use those last slides in a game, or just as a wrapping-up check for understanding, which is how I'm using it.

**EDIT:
I teach with a Korean co-teacher, and she came up with this great attention grabber at the beginning of our lesson.  We moved from the typical morning greetings, which are a sort of class-wide open conversation, to her dramatic statement, "I think I'm stronger than you, Sonja Teacher."  Then we began to (mock) argue back and forth about who was stronger, resulting in a highly exaggerated arm wrestling match.  The kids LOVED it, especially when I sorrowfully announced that "She is stronger than me."  We then had the kids arm wrestle with their desk partners, and then the winners would stand up and say, "I am stronger than Min-Jee/Dong-Hyun/etc."

Re: Grade 6 Lesson 10 - "I'm Stronger Than You" OLYMPIC game

This is a game I've played any time a supervisor is watching, ie for afterschool or camp... and for Lesson 10.  Can take 20 to 40 minutes depending on how much you draw it out and explain.

It gets a little wild, but if you have a good Korean co, or don't mind taking away points/stars/stickers, you can keep it going.

It gets every single kid playing as well.

its really important not to show the kids which event its going to be, so the kids are picked at random.  So you'll have a tall kid going up for "who is the shortest."  They freak out.

If you have a wild class, you can remove the team captain, and have the kids volunteer.

For fastest, I have the kids try to catch a dropping ruler between two fingers, seeing how can get the lowest number.

For strongest I have the kids throw a pieces of paper and see who can throw it the farthest in the classroom (I count bouncing on the wall and going backwards against them.)

For luckiest/unluckiest, I have the kids roll dice.

For best, a 3 way game of good old gawi bawi bo

for smartest, I just ask them a super simple question.. ie "raise your right hand."  first kid that does it/is listening wins.

Also, the ppt for the game was made by a friend who will get pissy if I don't give him credit. (i just edited it up)

Is it okay just to post a link here (I'm new)?  I really want to thank all the people who post their powerpoints and videos and all.  I'm using these posts to learn how to make a powerpoint (at least I intend to) and will certainly post here if I ever come up with something good.

In the meantime, here's a good game from Genki English:

http://genkienglish.net/cardgame.htm

It has to be expanded a bit from the way they explain it but it works very well for this lesson if you can get the students making all those comparisons with full sentences.

I used the Daft Hands video too, for this one.  We used Expo-Dry Erase markers (which wash off super easily), and just did Hard-er,Bett-er,Fast-er, Strong-er.  The camera crew and news anchor from some news channel from Daegu actually recorded a bit of this lesson, as they were taping a special on our school yesterday... yikes!

I think the kids really liked it, but some potential issues arose when the hand dancer used their middle fingers... I forgot how immature 5th graders are.  And, some others were just so mezmerized by it all that they forgot to participate.  Overall, though, I'd say it was a good idea.

Here is a game I found on BarryfunEnglish. I attached the pdf. I also attached the key expressions and a list of adjectives for then to make the sentences with. I glued it to the bottom of the page before I made copies so the students could refer to it.
