(대교 Daegyo) Grade 3, Lesson 4 - "Happy Mother's Day"
« on: April 22, 2011, 12:47:15 pm »
My plan for this lesson (period 1):

1. Review - Touch your eye/ear/nose.
2. Talk about gift-giving.  When do you give gifts?  Birthday/Christmas/Mother's Day
3. It's my birthday! What do you say?  Happy birthday.  It's Mother's Day!  What do you say? ...
4. What do you give your mother on Mother's Day?
5. Watch videos.  Sing.
6. Teach "This is for you."  "Oh, Thank you!  It's a __."  (Maybe ask whose birthday is in April/May and give them a pencil as a gift.)
7. Do role-play game from book.  Use the music from the videos.  Split the class into two teams.  Team A will be mothers with a mother card and an object card.  Team B will be sons and daughters with only an object card (the son and daughter cards in the book are ridiculous).  Walk around while the music is playing.  When the music stops, sons and daughters must find a mother and say, "Happy Mother's Day!  This is for you."  If the mother has the same object card she says, "Oh, thank you!  It's a book/scarf/pen," and the students hug.  If not, the mother says, "Sorry."  Play 2 or 3 rounds.  No points or winners.  If everyone does well, they'll all get a point.

*I don't agree with saying "I'm happy/angry/sad!" after getting a gift, so I'll teach 'feelings' in period 4.

8. If the game sucks, I have a kizclub craft project as a back-up.  The students will make Mother's Day Cards (attached).  I plan on only using the first page, and pre-cutting the cards.  The students will write "Happy Mother's Day!" and their name...then color it.

Here is a ppt for period 1. Includes Evolution game.

To play the game:
Students do a dialog with their partner.
Rock-Paper- Scissors
The winner goes on to the next level. ie ant to chicken.

Cheers
Maureen

Scanned from textbook.

1. Practice expressions.
2. Use a pointer for feeling wheel.
3. Make a Face - Students have to make a face for what they think the next slide will be.
4. Guess the Face - give each student a card (babies slide).  Students wander the room with a blank face.  When asked: "Happy?"/"Sad?"/"Angry?" they reveal their card.  Adapt as you see fit.

I'm going to show this video as an introduction to gift giving, just while the kids are settling down into their seats!

Here is what I am doing for this lesson.

P1 ppt - including Happy Birthday.
Game is a pass the ball and bag of gifts and practice the expressions at the end of the ppt.

P2 ppt - review and then I'm happy etc.
for this lesson I am playing a dice game. Each team gets the numbers 1-6 written on the board. Students take it in turns to say the expression (from a flashcard) and then they roll the dice. They get to erase the number they roll from the board. The winning team is the team with the fewest numbers remaining.

For P3 I am going to play a singing game. One student goes outside. We pick another student and then they come back in. The students sing the song quiet and get louder as they get closer to the correct student. Then the student has to pick one by saying Happy Birthday name. If they are right their team will get 1 point.

For P4 I am going to make birthday cards and might play the pass the ball game.

Grade 3 Lesson 4: Happy Mother's Day!
« Reply #13 on: April 28, 2011, 01:24:55 pm »
Here is a ppt and pass the parcel game.

I have a really small class so I'm going to wrap up different objects. Flash cards in envelopes could work well for bigger classes.

Instead of playing music you could get the students to sing a chant.

I'm looking forward to this class! I loved this game when I was a kid.

Hey all...I haven't been posting anything because we've just been following the textbook for pretty much everything.

But for part 3, we did a short game with the kids.

We gave them three pieces of paper and asked what they wanted for Children's Day.  They had to draw 3 pictures and write their names underneath.  Then they walked around and exchanged "gifts" with their friends using the dialog from the book.  (Happy Children's Day!  This is for you.  Wow!  It's a ______. Thank you./You're welcome.)  They seemed to like it!

Great book on the emotion: Anger.
Used this with young students before and we talked about what triggers their frustration and appropriate and safe ways to deal with anger.

I used the previously supplied Mario game to prepare a very easy game that is only about feelings.  Sad, angry, happy, etc.

Here's a pirate game focusing on emotions. I've used easily recognizable cartoon characters
