Where the Wild Things Are Reading - Book, Game, and Activities
« on: December 14, 2015, 03:31:30 PM »
I'm uploading this all together in case someone is looking for reading materials for winter camp  :cheesy: I used Where the Wild Things Are with my high-level third grade elementary afterschool reading class, and it went over fairly well! This is a classic kids lit book, so there is tons and tons of useful material floating out there on the web.

Schedule:

Day one, read the book. My copy of the "book" is adapted from a PPT someone else made here of Where The Wild Things Are (THANK YOU), with added definitions and explanations for certain words in Korean. Feel free to omit if you do not like to use Korean definitions^^ At the end is a worksheet for students to do along with reading the text out loud and also some coloring pages as an extra filler. I also suggest showing them the animated ebook version of WTWTA if there's extra time.

For the second day of this unit, I have attached a puzzle PPT which is basically the same text as the PPT. A good way to review is to have each student cut out their jigsaw piece, and then made them all read it and put it and the story together. In my afterschool class, I then finished by playing Round One of a bomb game (from a template from here at Waygook), based on the same vocabulary words as the worksheet, along with trivia questions about WTWTA's story and characters. There are also little "team challenge" questions for fun.

For the third day of the unit, I had students work on coloring and cutting out the character coloring sheets and also coloring the mini-figures to make chopstick-puppets (very easy). These all made a great-looking class poster if you want to decorate your classroom, by the way! Finished by playing Round Two of the bomb game.

Fourth day: Finish up all coloring and arts and crafts activity, and have students do the wordsearch for WTWTA (same vocabulary as worksheet basically). This could also be a good day to show them the Where the Wild Things Are 2009 live action movie if you have a copy!

I may have to re-watch it, but my recollection of the WTWTA live action movie was that there were sections that were really slow.  So I wonder if you found if the movie keeps the kids attention or do they get bored.....  Perhaps you suggest skipping some slow bit?

Also, thanks for the materials

This is an activity booklet from HarperCollins.  It pairs nicely with the book.

Thanks so much for sharing this unit! I am hoping to use it for my winter camp soon.
Just wondering about the bomb game? It doesn't seem to work, after a question has been answered and points awarded, how do I return to the original screen as it just goes straight to the next question?
thanks!
