Lesson 10: My Special Days
« on: November 09, 2009, 02:03:05 PM »
This lesson doesn't relate too closely to the book.  I found this chapter to be rather empty (middle school english - haas), so I put together a general holiday lesson.  I am still working out the kinks, and would love some advice if anyone sees a quick fix.

MY SPECIAL DAYS Revised: Complete textbook lesson w/ bomb game!

I revised this lesson to include all the talking points in the textbook, and attached a bomb game at the end of it. Great way to incorporate the holiday vocab into the actual lesson. Very successful and definitely takes up the full period!

Hope this can be of use.

i made the language simpler on some slides, and took away the numberings.  i also changed the order of the holidays to put something a little more familiar at the beginning so that my students felt like it was a bit easier.

one of the slides from carnival has a woman wearing what amounts to an eye patch bikini, i.e. just covering her nipples.  students stop listening when this slide is up, so i usually stand in front of the woman's picture to explain that slide.  i might just change the picture.

one way to make the bomb game a bit more related to class is to change some of the question mark boxes into dialogs or tasks, instead of power ups or enemies.  i havent made these changes myself, thats why i didnt upload a new bomb game

I'm a little confused. I've just started looking at chapter 10, and it's not really about special days or holidays. It's about telephone conversations. Why are there so many holiday PPTs? Am I missing something?

There are holiday powerpoints because the title is "My Special Days."  It seems to be a common thing in this series of textbooks to title a chapter and then have language patterns that are loosely (if at all) connected to the theme.  At least, in this case, you can tie telephone conversations to making plans for a holiday or party.  I was thinking about teaching about the holidays and then having the students (in groups), choose one holiday and make a telephone conversation inviting each other to the event in which they explain about the holiday.

Since I already started on the subject, I would like to point out that I really do hate this textbook.  Not only are the themes and language patterns loosely connected, sometimes it's not clear what exactly the students should be learning.  Shouldn't there be a list of vocabulary at the beginning or end of each chapter?  Why isn't there a glossary at the end of the book?  I just don't understand the logic...

Thank you so much for posting this! I had no idea what to do with my class :o. This is great! ;D So I am thinking for a game/practice. I will have the students bring their cellphones...write down their number and put them all in a bag. Then I will have random students pick a number, call it, and using the dialog from the power point have a conversation with the other student. Has anyone tried this before? If so, could you let me know how it went?  Or any suggestions you may have on how to improve it or make it more exciting?

Yeh one idea something we used to do as kids. Grab a few cans (food cans or even plastic cups) Poke a hole at the bottom and tie some string connecting the 2 cans and use them as telephones. I don't know what your schools policy is for mobiles but you it could be something the students haven't done before. Google the instructions as mine are not full of detail. But they might enjoy that more.

Got burnt out on holidays, so I focused on the phone and party vocab/key phrases. Instructions for a telephone activity and a DIY party invitation.

My ppt game using Sprite06's awesome Pokemon game template! All credit goes to him for making that (thanks man!), I just put in the questions!

Questions are for intermediate level kids and up. Also threw in some random trivia questions because making 26 questions about this lesson was pretty difficult. It's a little repetitive cause I can only quiz them on the Listen and Talk parts.

Here is a simple, no prep game that you can play to reinforce the phone dialogue.  I played it today and my kids got a kick out of it:

Choose one student to come to the front of the class.  This student is the "caller" and must face the board, away from the rest of the class.  The caller/class follow the basic dialogue which I wrote on the board for them.  For the line "May I speak to _______?" The caller must pick someone from the class.  After they finish the dialogue, random students from the class should take turns disguising their voices and saying "Hello?"  The caller must decided if the person is actually who they asked for.  If they think the person is who they asked for,  they reply with "Hello, ____." If they don't think it is the person they asked for, they should reply with "May I speak to _____?" again.  This continues with different students disguising their voices until the caller guesses correctly.  Then, choose a new caller and repeat.

You could also try doing this activity in groups, but I would make sure to do it together as class first to make sure they all understand.  (I initially tried the activity in groups and ended up with a class of confused children.)

Sample dialgue:

Class: "Hello?"
Caller: "May I speak to  (choose 1 student from class), please?"
Class: "Sure. Who is calling?"
Caller:  "This is (caller's name)."
-----------------------------
Randomly select students to come up and say: Hello? (with disguised voice)

If caller thinks "Hello" is from the person they asked for they reply: "Hello, _____."
If caller thinks "Hello" is from someone other than the person they asked for: "May I speak to (person they originally asked for)?"

I hope that makes sense!! Good luck!!

I haven't tried this before, but I think it might work for my lower students.  I'm also thinking about emphasizing Halloween as a holiday since it's coming up.  Have students ask other students to come trick-or-treating; what costume they will wear; etc....

Sorry if this is actually included in your posts, but it would be GREAT if everyone could start including how much time their lesson takes to teach (or at least what the goal is).  For instance, how many class periods would you spend using the Mario game?  Of course, we would also have to include how long your periods are
