The year is winding down, so I'm sure some of you need stuff to fill the last few pointless classes of the year. This might do the trick.
This activity was made for middle school, but I'm sure high schoolers could make use of it, too, or maybe elementary 6th graders, in a pinch. Maybe.
For starters, I taught my students a lesson about superheroes and super powers before the break, so they "know" vocabulary for various powers and how to use them in sentences. I'll include the ppts for the vocabulary and game I used for that lesson, but you can probably do this activity without doing the lesson. The activity takes up an entire class period, so if you want to do the lesson AND the activity, plan on using two class periods.
The Superhero Files instructions:
Prep: print the SUPERHERO FILES power cards Word doc and cut it into three pieces. That's it!
- Slides 2 - 14 are a review (or overview, if you choose not to do the lesson first) of the powers they'll need to know for the game. They're mostly pretty self explanatory, but if you need the Korean translations, you can find them in the lesson vocab ppt.
- Divide the class into three groups, and give each group ONE super power worksheet .
- Slide 15 is the power selection slide. Each team must select four powers, and each power can only be selected by one team (ie only one team can have Super Strength). The best way to do this is call on a team and ask them to choose one power, click the corresponding power on the slide when it is chosen to make it disappear, and tell the team to write the power on their sheet. Then, ask the next team to do the same. Repeat this process until all the powers have been chosen.
- Slide 16 is the scorekeeping slide. Click a number to advance one digit. Click the mouse in the lower right corner to go to the file cabinet selection screen.
- Slide 17 is the file cabinet slide. Each cabinet "contains" eleven different files. A team must select a file cabinet to go to a file selection slide.
- Slides 18 -20 are the file selection slides. A team must select a file, which will take them to a problem/situation slide. Clicking the paperclip will take you back to the file cabinet slide.
- Slides 21 - 54 are the problem/situation slides. Each one contains a unique situation for which some powers are better suited than others. When you go to a situation slide, ask the students to discuss which of their powers is best suited to help solve the problem, and why. Talk to each group and let them explain which of their powers they would use.
The level of detail in their answers would of course depend on the level of your students. If they're lower level and can only say something along the lines of "I can use 'super strength,'" that's fine, but if they're higher level you can ask them why they would use a power, or what they would do with it.
- After you've discussed the situation and possible solution with the class, click the screen one time to make the Power Tiles appear. Explain to the students that each power has a point value dependent upon its usefulness in any given situation (ask a CoT for help if you need to), then click again to make the point values appear.
- Each group must add the numbers from all four of their powers, and the amount of points their team gets for that round is the sum of all four numbers. eg If a team has Flight, Super Speed, Invisibility, and Mind Control for 3, 6, 2, and 8 points respectively, they would earn 19 points for that round.
- Click the screen once more to make the mouse appear in the corner. Click the mouse to go to the scorekeeping screen and enter their scores. Click the mouse in the corner of that screen to return to the file cabinet slide.
- Repeat all of that until you run out of either time or files. Honestly, unless you have super long classes, you'll run out of time long before you run out of situations to discuss.
I hope all that made sense. My classes have all enjoyed it for the most part, so I hope some of you can get some use out of this, too.
