Accidents Lesson with Activities
« on: February 10, 2016, 01:12:37 PM »
Hey All,

I've got a new lesson which I've put a lot thought into and which should hopefully be interesting to the students. The lesson covers common accidents.

Presentation: Students learn phrases related to common accidents: slipped and fell, fell off a ladder, fell off my bike, got electrocuted, etc. They also learn some phrases we can say to prevent accidents: be careful, don't run, etc.

Practice: Students play battleship using the template which includes the target vocabulary.

Production: Students complete "Unlucky Obama" drawing activity. Students read about various accidents that occurred when Obama visited Korea. Students should draw a picture corresponding with each sentence in the story.

All materials are attached, including the lesson plan. I think the kids will really enjoy this one!

Hey All,

So I decided to revamp this lesson as I felt like I could make it a lot better. I ended up pairing the accidents with some common, everyday injuries. I felt like this makes the battleship game and just the whole lesson run a lot more smoothly and coherently. I also added in a dialog that the students can practice. Overall I think its just a much better lesson, and is actually very useful if the students ever travel abroad and get hurt.

I'm uploading everything here, including a revised lesson plan. Hope this helps!

I did this lesson last week. Overall it went quite well, and I think the students enjoyed the activities. The Battleship game really got the students speaking a lot. My students, however, were completely unfamiliar with Battleship at first. I ended up drawing out the grids on the board and playing with my co-teacher a few rounds. The PPT alone didn't seem to be enough explanation for them, so I'd highly recommend playing a few rounds with your co-teacher on the whiteboard so that the students can understand the game well.

Over 400 downloads and not message of thanks?!

Thanks, Cliff. Your lessons are always great. You have saved me so much time!

One thing though, the gif of the guy riding down the hill on his bike and hitting the car. I remember that this guy died from that accident. If anyone teaches at a school with picky parents (like I do) think carefully about this gif.

Thanks all I'm glad you're getting some good use out of this. I'm reviewing for the students' final exam now, and so I made a short "sleeping elephants" game to review. I'm posting that here.

Was a hit with the students. My quietest students have been happily participating :)

Changed the Obama activity to the game Telephone, so we would still be using the target language and it worked well as well!

Cheers Cliff !
