Got any good jokes for middle schoolers?
« on: March 10, 2016, 04:00:01 PM »
Got any good jokes for middle schoolers? One-liners preferably?

I thought it would be a good idea to cluck like a chicken in front of my students, but they were thoroughly mystified (perhaps bad timing).

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Don't try.  Korean and Western humor really doesn't agree.  My wife is Korean.  Her English is very good.  There are very few things her and I both laugh at.  Humor doesn't translate well.  I try showing Koreans funny things, but they just smile.

She did like this joke, but I don't know how appropriate it is for middle school students.  Note: you also have to take into account that Koreans have a hard time pronouncing the "f" sound and usually make the "p" sound.

Q: Why did the Korean guy get a hockey puck from his girl friend?
A: Because, when she asked, "What do you want for you birthday?" he always answered, "I want a puck."

Q: Why did the Korean guy have to eat with a spoon but had plenty of pig in America?
A: Because he kept on asking for pork with his food.

Today, my students asked me if I knew who Psy was.

I said "Yes, he's my brother."

And everyone started laughing.

And then I said "But he's from LA and I'm from New York, so we hate each other. Boo, LA!" I did this while giving the thumbs-down gesture.

And then they laughed again.

Maybe they were being polite or maybe I'm just a funny-looking person. Or maybe on some level these jokes were kind of funny to them. Or maybe it's just the beginning of the year and we're going through our honeymoon phase again. Not sure.

Nevertheless, just I'd supply some feedback.

I have just searched "English riddles" before and taken them offline. At any level, the students are sooo clever! Anything that involves solving something seemed really popular and they would all go "AHHHH" when the answer was explained.

For example, "Why did the man throw butter out of the window?" --He wanted to see a butterfly. It's really cheesy, but riddles like this were a total hit in several of my classes.

I also introduced some cute knock knock jokes to them--it doesn't seem like they have the equivalent in Korea.

It isn't a joke but I showed this to my Grade 6 students.  They got a really good laugh.  Then you can ask them, "Who's on third base?"  When the student raises their hand and says, "I don't know."  You can make the joke, "Why did you raise your hand if you don't know."

Just google "konglish jokes" The kids will both chuckle and groan. It's a good integration of Korean and English. Just make sure you get the Korean pronunciation right or it will totally ruin the joke!

Here's a thread with some good ones!

I love all of these! Thank you so much!!

Actually, I used some of them today and the VP pointed at me and said with a smile "You a comedian every day!" It was sooo cute. I wanted to pinch his cheeks.

Anyway, thanks again, fellow teachers. You're all amazing! =P

Sweet! Thank you so much! You're the best!

My co-teachers loved the stick joke! I'll try it on my students next week!

Warm wishes,
