Learning from Black Jack ?
« on: March 21, 2016, 11:09:17 AM »
Has anyone ever made an English game out of the game Black Jack?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to make it educational (either through reviewing vocabulary or something else) and would love recommendations from people who have done similar thought-experiments. I'm teaching high school, so a majority of my students have enough proficiency for classes to be conversational.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much,

Todd

Not a good idea considering gambling is illegal (except 1 casino in the sticks) for Koreans. It's also probably not something that Korean parents are gonna be too chuffed to hear about when little Jimmy comes home from school and asks " Dad, have you ever played blackjack?".

But can the whole gambling aspect be stripped completely? I'm just attempting to think out of the box here. Sue me.

I actually just did a blackjack lesson this past week. I'm teaching mostly low-level middle schoolers, though, so I don't know if what I did would be too applicable for high schoolers who are actually conversant.

I did it in part to teach them terms involved in playing card games (like the names of the suits and the cards), and in part to give them more practice using numbers. I still have students who can barely count past ten and regularly confuse 12 and 20, so it was something they sorely needed.

There was no betting involved, so they didn't learn stuff like "all in" or "double down." It was just the cards/points aspect of it, so it wasn't really any different from teaching them Uno or something like that.

I didn't take up a whole period with it, though. This year, my classes are split into textbook listening exercises for the first half, then "whatever you want" for the second half, so that's when I did it.

If you're curious, I've uploaded the PPT I made for it. It's mostly vocab and an explanation of the rules, but the last slide is the cards slide. Click a card to flip it, then click the suit shape and number to cycle through them.

I did have to bring an actual deck of cards with me, because I don't know the first thing about creating flash games. I'd draw a card from the deck, then put that card up on the screen via cycling the suits/numbers on a card on the slide.

I'd then ask the students what the name of the card is, and how many points they have. I gave each team their first two cards before asking them if they wanted to hit or stay/stand.

For what it's worth, none of my coteachers (I have four) seemed to have any problems whatsoever with me teaching them a card game, and if any of them  have gone home to tell their parents, I haven't heard about any problems it might have caused.

I made a blackjack themed template for my students.  For simplicity's sake, I removed any wagering, as well as royals, so it's more of a card themed bomb game.

The students flip 1 card at a time, and choose to flip another (hit me), or collect their current points (stay).  If they stay, the sum of the flipped cards = the amount of points for the team.  If a team goes over 21, they get 0.  If they get 21 exactly, they get 21 points + 10 bonus points.

You can add your lesson's content into the template if you want to use it.  Questions go in the red text box on the top of the question slides, and answers go in the white box text box at the bottom.  It's a little bit cluttered, but my students seemed to enjoy it when they played.
