Zombie Run board game
« on: April 08, 2016, 03:28:55 PM »
Zombie Run:  Zombies are chasing you!  Run home and hide!

This is a board game set to run as a PPT.  Also, it's huge.  I had to span it over 3 RAR files to be able to post this.

Players advance based on their dice rolls rather than their English skill level.  This gives everyone an equal chance of winning regardless of ability.  Players are encouraged to help each other with their answers in order to ensure student achievement.  The first runner home is the winner.

I use a big plush die for the students to roll when this is used as a whole class activity.

2-6 players or groups.  The number buttons control player advancement on the board.  The first click makes the runner appear.  Every click after that advances the player one space.  I encourage the students to count off the moves in English as I click.
Board spaces:
Players have different tasks depending on the space that they land on.

Letter space:
Say and spell a word that begins with the letter in the space.  The teacher writes this word on the board.  It can’t be used again by other players.
Elephant space:
“What is it?”  “It’s a(n) animal”
Click the elephant crate.  A menu with playing cards comes up.  The student/group must name a card for you to click.  The card will disappear and reveal an animal underneath.  The player must identify the animal.

Clock / Number space:
Click the clock crate.  A menu appears with different city locations.  The player must choose a location to hide from the zombies.  A “How many?” question will appear, and the students must count the objects in English.

Color wheel space:
Click the color crate.  A menu will appear with classroom items.  The player must choose a classroom item to receive a “What color is the ___?” question.

Zombie Hand space:
Click the zombie crate.  Students must choose a letter or number.  All of these questions focus on grammar points from 3rd or 4th grade.  Each question is zombie themed.  Mixed in with the questions are 2 “advance 2 spaces” screen instead of questions.  For those, the player doesn’t have to answer anything, they get to move 2 extra spaces ahead.

Clicking “Run” will bring you back to the game board.

Play events:
The game board has 2 timed events.
The first is a screaming zombie girl that pops up after 1 minute of time passes at the game board.
The second is a wandering zombie that appears about a minute after the screaming girl.  He doesn’t do anything, he just adds some color to the game.  Students watch him and try to move their players out of his path, but he doesn’t affect game play.

This was made in Office 2013 and designed for a wide screen TV.  Your performance/mileage may vary depending on what you run this on.  I have play-tested this for quite a while now, and have had zero issues on my school computers.

I have used this in camp when planned activities took way less time than planned, when groups of kids come to hang out in the English room after school, and at the end of the year in class when there’s a bit more freedom in the lesson planning.  You can easily get 15 minutes of game time.  Die rolls and student ability will affect this, though.

Part 2.  Also, if you don't know how to combine the rar files....  Google it.

It looks great, but when I extract the files I get two errors. And after opening the file I can't save it. Maybe because of the errors?

I can't replicate your problem.  I just extracted the files and ran them without an issue.

What is the error message?

Also, what do you mean you can't save it after you extract it?  Do you mean Office won't let you save?  You wouldn't need to save anything unless you make changes.  There's embedded fonts that some versions of office get testy with if you edit things, but if you're opening it as read only, there shouldn't be an issue

The error message is: 'Failed to extract'. I think parts 2 and 3 are the problem files.

Yes, Office won't let me save.

I don't know what version of Office you're running, and I'm no longer super versed in all that is microsoft.  It's probably because of the fonts.  The Korean fonts aren't truetype, and the embedded fonts may give you issues if you change stuff around.

Actually, if it says "failed to extract" how did you open it in office?  the 3 rars combine to one mega ppt file.  you wouldn't be able to extract it and open it if everything went kablooey.

I don't know why you need to save in office anyway.  It's a turnkey game waiting to go.

Works great for me, used winrar, thank you!

sweet.  I hope your kids like it.

If he was truly wise, he'd simply put it on google drive ;)

PS.  I downloaded - unrared it using winrar - it works well.  Pretty awesome board game, thanks for that.  I take it students have to say or write a word starting with written letters when landing in the letter boxes?

Anyways, once again, this is a pretty awesome board game - should be good for one of my after-school periods.

Oh - and here is a google drive link for those unable to unrar it.

I gave you props, dude.  Don't shed tears.
But yeah, when it comes to big files, I suggest google drive - it's a LOT faster than the server here and allows you to store/share giant files.

I'm not shedding tears, just feeling justified for not posting all of the things I make.  I post the game, and you tell me I'm unwise for not posting it in the way you would have done.  Use the game or don't, but maybe keep your opinions to yourself.

Ah, but there is the rub.  My message was not for you, but for the person who praised your rar splitting skills.  And listen - when we post something here, it's not a bad trait to be open to criticism - especially given that in this case it wasn't criticism per se, but rather a suggestion.

But jeez - do what you want.  If even this little bit seriously bothers you, I do indeed suggest not posting anything at all - because the odds are that one day you will indeed encounter REAL criticism and given your reaction to this little bit, it will likely psychologically destroy you.

I take constructive criticism very well, but I don't appreciate comments from a pratt.

SERIOUS props for an awesome game, though I'm not sure how you plow through it in 15min. I would happily spend 30-45min on this game myself, without the kids playing at all.

I hope you make more games and keep posting them.
