Pizza Lesson
« on: April 14, 2016, 03:13:43 PM »
I made a lesson about Pizza for my middle school students, so why not share it?

There's a vocab presentation ppt w/ some video links, and a pizza bomb game.

The vocab presentation is a bit lengthy, but many of the words are cognates, and several others they should be familiar with already anyway. I included (CoT-approved) Korean translations. Expect to spend 15-20 minutes going over and talking about it.

DISCLAIMER: I am an American, so the section of the PPT about toppings only covers topping that are common in the US, and the section about specific styles of pizza only deals with styles from the US (NY, Chicago, and Detroit styles, specifically). Feel free to add or remove anything to suit your own pizza preferences.

The videos linked are a short "How to make a pizza" vid, and a long-ish (~9mins) vid where Korean girls try American style pizzas. So far I haven't bothered showing the first video, and don't show the entire second video. There's a bit at the beginning of it where the narrator talks some sh!t about Korean pizza, so I skip the intro and start when they're actually discussing the pizza (0:41).

The bomb game is pretty straight forward. On the scoreboard, click the pizzas to cycle through "mascots," and click the blocks to cycle through numbers. You can also click the "+" sign to cycle between plus and minus.

On the question slides, click the question to make the answer appear. On the reward slides, students have to choose Homemade, Delivery, or Pizzeria. Click their choice, and the points will appear. Click the Home icon to go back to the scoreboard, then click it again to go back to the ABC screen.

I'll include a finished and a blank version of the ppt, in case anyone wants to just use the template for another topic.

As always, test the ppts on your computers first to make sure there are no conflicts before using them in class.

Thanks, Mister Tim! I was thinking about doing an "American food" cultural lesson in a couple weeks, and this will fit in perfectly! The PPT looks gorgeous and makes me hungry for American pizza.  :cheesy:

Would you mind posting the video links? I can't get the videos to play.

Edit: Never mind, I found the one of the Korean girls trying pizza. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooizM4P27lA

I'm glad you might be able to get some use out of it! I put an almost embarrassing amount of time into some of my ppts, so it gives me the warm fuzzies when they help other teachers.

Yeah, the videos are embedded at the end of the vocab ppt, but if anyone's having problems with the embeds, here they are:

Thanks for all of the hard work! I'm planning on making homemade pizza and sauce for my summer camp this year, and these materials should be perfect to introduce some vocabulary and to whet the students' appetites. Thank you!

Thank you for this pizza topic! It actually took the interest of my worst all-boys school (I have 3 middle schools, of them all boys). This saved my life last week.

Wow!!!  Thanks so much Mister Tim!!  I've added some dialogues to your main PowerPoint to get my middle school students to do some role plays.  First I get them to fill in the blanks of the dialogue.  Sometimes I play a hangman game to help them guess the right answer.  After filling in the blanks to a slide I get two volunteers to be the customer service representative and the customer.  The volunteers each get a piece of candy.  I also took your Pizza Quiz questions and images and put them into the Doraemon Bomb Game Template.  My kids love bomb games.  I'm planning on doing this lesson on the last period of one of my camp days and I'm going to ask my co-teacher if we can order pizza for lunch.  The next day we are going to make steak and make peanut butter jelly sandwiches for our cooking class.  But why not order pizza one day?  Thanks again!  ;D

Okay I've also added a worksheet.  I will get volunteers to do the role play afterwards.  This is what is on the worksheet:

INTERVIEW YOUR PARTNER!
(a) Hi. Can I order a ________ pizza for delivery, please.
(b) Yes.  What toppings would you like on your pizza?
(a) I would like ______________, ______________, and _________________.
(b) Okay. What will you have to drink?
(a) I will have ________________.
(b) Will you have any side orders?
(a) Yes.  I will have _______________ and _________________. What is my total after those are added to my bill?
(b) It is _______________.  May I have your address, please?
(a) Yes, I live at ______________________.  How long until I get my delivery?
(b) It will take ______ minutes.
(a) Okay.  Thank you.
