3rd Grade Lesson 10 I Can Swim
« on: November 24, 2009, 09:28:08 am »
Here is a fairly easy powerpoint just going over some action words.  The second is action flash cards.  They're good if you print two to a page.  Works excellent for a action relay race.  Break the class into three lines.  All students face forward except for the last student in each line.  They see the action card.  As fast as possible, tap, not hit (you may want to demonstrate), the next person on the shoulder to turn around and demonstrate the action without talking.  This goes down the line.  When it reaches the front, the first student has to say the action in a sentence (ex. "I can dance.").  The first team to say it correctly gets the point.  Continue until all students have had a chance at the front and back.  The team with the most right answers wins.  This activity does take some space and about 10-15 minutes time.  Make sure the students understand that the room must be completely quiet.

Are you able to post this in a different file format? I can't open .pptx or .docx with Microsoft Office 2003. If you're able to re-post them, that would be great! Thanks!

I've attached a funnier powerpoint for "I can swim."  My co-teacher sent it to me, and I plan on using it for class.  After the PPT, I'll probably do that tap, tap, action game.  Then I'll teach them a Christmas song.  Maybe Jingle Bells.

And thanks for posting these lessons under curriculum headings!!

I know it's a little early since this will be a fall lesson, but here is the lesson plan you want.  I just put it into word, I didn't work on the formatting at all for these so it may look a little messy.  Sorry.  Available for Windows 97-2003 and 2007

Sheila, I used your powerpoint for my K-1-2 class to teach "I can..." and it was awesome!

I played a game with your flashcards that turned out to be a little out-of-control (so it may be good for a summer camp and a big empty space). The idea was from www.teach-esl-to-kids.com. Have the kids line up on one side of the classroom (move all desks aside). Stand on the other end and hold up a flashcard. Have them chant "I can jump". Then instruct everyone to jump. Yell stop. Slowly turn over flashcard. If there is a ghost on the back, chase them back to the wall. (This is where it gets loud).

The coteachers were ok with it during regular class, and the kids wanted to play again. The second time, when I caught someone I made them change places with me and they would instuct the class to chant, yell "stop", and chase.

so i used these PPTs for an after school class, but they both deal with the "I Can/Can't..." lesson. the CanCan't PPT has a link to "Can you clap" song by Peter Weatherall. the next 3 slides have pictures for 'jump', 'hop', and 'swim'. each slide has the question "Can you..." that relates to the picture. an en-Xed pic is "Yes, I can." then click and a red X comes up, followed by another click for "No, I can't". after those 3 slides is a Guess the Animal Game. boxes hiding an animal disappear while hints like "I can..."/"I can't.." appear. my kids enjoyed it so i hope it helps.

PPT CanCant2 starts with a "What can I do?" game. it's pretty much like the Guess the Animal Game, except using the 'jump, 'hop', 'swim' pictures, as well as 'play soccer', and 'run'. after that is a filler slide for them to play bingo. i had them write the words for the actions down, but there is also a slide that has the pictures with the words to help them out. this might be difficult for 3rd graders though. i did this for a mixed afterschool class of 4th and 3rd (mostly 4th) and it took a while for them to write. anyways, these are simple and short PPTs that can be used as fillers :)

my co-teacher gave me these PPTs and games that she's used in the passed. i haven't used them yet 'cause classes start next week. you'll have to fix or tweak the PPTs according to your preference, but they are great starting points. sorry for the HWP format and weird symbols for the game files...i don't know what's up with that. anyways 1-2 are boardgames, 3 is bingo, 4 is Tic tac toe, 5-8 are PPTs and 9 is a video featuring the weird dinosaur-like character called Gogo. i've shown other Gogo videos (thanks to my co-teacher 'cause i don't know who this thing is) and my 3rd graders really enjoy it. plus the vocab in the video is spot on. enjoy

Here is a bomb game that seems to be an option that would work with your pass the ball game.  I hope you like it.

Cheers for all the great ideas!  When I have smaller classes or more room I also have the student make two teams. The teams form two lines.  I then place them across from their "partner" I give them one action to share.  Once all of the students have an action they have to ask me "What can you do?" I say "I can _____." if the students action was called they have to run down the middle of the all of the other students and back around to their original place.  This game only works if you have space, but the kids seem to love it.  I also change their actions from time to time and place them with new "partners" The first person back to their spot gets a point.

I am going to play a guessing game. The students choose a flashcard but keep it secret from the other students. They have to guess the card by asking "can you ...?". If they ask "can you swim?" and the person has the swim card they will answer "yes I can" but if they don't have the swim card they will answer "no, I can't". If the student guesses correctly they get to choose the next card.

I might play this for lesson 12 instead but will definitely use it for one of these lessons as the students really enjoy it.

Give one a sheet to each student.  Students go around and ask each other, "Can you____?"  Students reply 'yes' or 'no.'  If they reply 'yes' the student writes the other's name in the blank.  The first student to fill all of the blanks wins.

Grade 3, Lesson 7-- I Can...
« Reply #19 on: September 06, 2010, 05:46:58 pm »
This is a simple activity. Using the cards in the back of their book students read the words on the screen and put them in the same order from left to right on their desk. When they are finished they put their hands on their head. The first line(or group) to have everyone finish correctly gets 2 points. All the other correct teams get 1 point. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.
