Introducing vocabulary
« on: May 09, 2016, 01:56:58 PM »
So I have an open class coming up and I need a fun/ interesting way to introduce the lesson's vocabulary. I had been using a PPT with a hidden picture behind colors that would reveal the word as students called the colors. I'd use that but a coworker of mine used it two weeks ago for their last open class. If anyone has a customize-able template they use for introducing vocabulary it would be very helpful. ^^
I only teach English to students and hot girls so GTFO

I made this a while back. It's similar to what you describe but less effort to use as the pieces fall away in order.

For just plain introducing new words for the first time though, I don't see what's wrong with just showing a picture and asking if anyone know what the word is. Maybe keep it simple.

A few ideas:
  • Mime
  • Slow image reveal (best with paper flashcards)
  • Line by line sketch (can elicit extra words along the way, particularly shapes)
  • Decribing the word ("a yellow fruit", "Messi's favourite sport", etc)
If the kids come early, hangman before the bell rings whilst you wait for the remainder to arrive is also an priming option. You can use all of these for vocab review too, plus a couple more, like lip reading or a slow writing reveal. I've occasionally managed to clap out words with unusual stress patterns and had the kids catch on and repsond to the word ('the museum' in the recent directions and prepositions chapter springs to mind).
