Hobbies Lesson
« on: May 22, 2016, 05:59:31 PM »
Hey All,

I've got a new lesson on hobbies this week. I've noticed that when asked, "What is your hobby," many students will reply with "play games" not "playing games." I decided to create a lesson on hobbies, and I think these activities should really provide a great opportunity for speaking.

Presentation: Review the formation of gerunds and common hobbies. Introduce the students to a couple of new hobbies. Play a short video of a man practicing his hobby of blacksmithing.

Practice: Students receive a slip of paper with a description of a hobby on it. Students must walk around and find the other group members who have a slip of paper that describes the same hobby.

Production: Students play charades in teams. All of the charades cards are different hobbies.

I'm attaching all materials, including a detailed lesson plan. Hope this helps!

I'll add that I did this with 1st and 2nd years and overall it went pretty well. I would recommend this lesson more for 2nd years though, as the 1st years struggled with some of the vocabulary on the hobbies cards.

Therefore, if you do it with 1st years I'd recommend pre-teaching some of the vocabulary, or perhaps creating a PPT slide with the Korean-English translations of some of the harder words like "treadmill" when you do the practice activity. I think this would make it a little more effective.
