Hilarious and effective directions Game
« on: April 27, 2011, 03:34:21 pm »
This game is simple but there is some prep involved to be sure.

You'll need Numbered cards and red cards.  The numbered cards are provided in the attached Document.  For the red cards get some red construction paper.  You'll want to laminate about 7 pieces of red construction paper and cut each one into about 6 equalish segments.  Also laminate the Numbered cards.

Scatter the red cards all about the floor and then distribute the numbered cards among the red cards.  This is your "playing field."  The students will get into pairs.  One student is responsible for giving directions.  The other students will be blindfolded.  The object of the game is for the speaking student to direct the blindfolded student to step on the numbers in order without touching a red card. Each team is timed.  Stepping on a red card is a +2 second penalty for the team.

I normally have small strips of scrap paper cut up so when each team is done i can record their time and give it to them.  I also keep a running record of times at the desk so i can just call out the lowest time when the class is over instead of having all the students bring their slips up.  It's more efficient.  Using only numbers 1-7 takes, on average, about 5 minutes per group to get through.  Low end 4 high end 6.  Freak incidents have gotten them as little as 3:30 or as long as 8 minutes.  There is not enough time for everyone to go.  To the teams that volunteered I gave one small piece of candy.  To the team with the lowest time at the end of class i gave a small handful of candy as a prize.  The whole class gets VERY into this.  It's a good speaking exercise and a good listening exercise.  There's a lot of noise but it's an incredibly effective tool.  NOTE:  If there is a microphone in class i recommend it.  It's VERY hard to keep the room silent for this and it's difficult to play if the blindfolded one cant hear their partner.

Target Language (I have this all written on the board for reference during the game):
Take (number) (tiny, little, normal, big, huge) steps forward.
Turn (left, right, around).
Turn a little (left, right).
...a little more.
Sidestep (left, right)
Sidestep a little (left, right).
Step back.
Watch out!
Stop!

This sounds like a great way to wrap up a directions lesson. Thanks for this.

For my lesson on directions, I've also played "Pin the donkey's tail," specifically Eeyore's tail. The person pinning the tail is blindfolded and his/her group members have to give him instructions like move forward 6 steps, turn left/right, turn around, side step, e.t.c.

My kids had a blast!

Sounds like a great lesson.

I often do the same as Piyopayo (I seem to have taught direction lessons a bit too much). A variation on pin the tail on the donkey, if you can move the desks around, make a maze with sharks and treasure. The students are to direct the blindfolded student(s) around the maze and avoid the sharks and to the treasure.

My students always love blindfold games. It never gets old it seems!

I've been thinking about doing a similar thing with a maze. But I think the idea of land mines might be better.

The one snag ive hit is with unmotivated 3rd grade classes.  A couple classes in particular just did not give a damn

i usually put picture cards randomly on the board and blindfold one member of a team the others must direct him/her to the correct picture ..works great for speaking the target sentences!

I have played this but using candy. I place candy different places in the classroom and give them 45 secs-one minute to get there...the timing depends on the level of the class. If they find the candy before the time runs out they can keep if not they have to return it.  All my classes love it.

I just finished teaching giving directions and wanted to do a game to practice vocabulary with my after school classes.  This looks good!  Thanks

I made a treasure hunt around the school which the students loved. Each team were given a set of directions and had 5-6 clues. Once they followd the directions and worked out the clues they were able to make a secret sentence. They then came back to the class and presented what they had found.

I'm an English teacher in Korea.
The lesson I will teach now is about direction. But I cannot come up with proper idea.
Your lesson would give me a good help. Thanks.

These are some great ideas!  I am teaching a very basic conversational class to Korean teachers and trying to wing it made me want to slit my wrists today, lol!  It's fine when they are responsive, but it just felt like I was teaching extremely low level students.  So this game will be a great way to lend a slightly less-structured aspect to the end of a very structured asking directions-lesson.  Phew, thanks!  Will use it next week and report back.

I teach in elementary schools and make videos for my classes. A friend at a middle school as me to help make one for her classes, with the topic being directions. Enjoy!

I used this activity in my class. To some it worked well, but others it didn't.
I think a teacher should set different teaching strategies to different classes.
