2010-2011 6th Grade Lesson 15 It's time to go home.

Since I see 6th grade twice this week, I did the first lesson on "It's time to go home." and the second lesson on Thanksgiving.
For "It's time to go home" my coteacher gave the students a writing test in which I said ten English words and the students wrote them down (15 min). Then, we went straight into the bomb game which lasted for the rest of class. I went through every picture of the bomb game and had them repeat it back to me i.e. Don't run! Don't jump on the bed! It's 8am..It's time to get up. It's time to eat breakfast. etc... We played with six teams and everyone on the team had to say the answer, together. The students enjoyed it very much.
I haven't done the Thanksgiving lesson yet, but here's what I plan to do: My coteacher requested that I explain the word "Crazy." So, in my PPT there's a few slides on the definition of crazy. Then, we talk about Thanksgiving food. Then we talk about 'being thankful' on thanksgiving. Lastly, the students make a turkey hand where they write what they are thankful for on every finger. The turkey hands will be decoration for the walls.

Can you explain your rules for the bomb game just a little bit more. Is it somewhat like Jeopardy? It looks like a very cute powerpoint so I just want to know how to use it correctly. Thanks!

The bomb game: First I ask the students "what's this?" pointing to the first picture on the slide with all the pictures. (Feel free to change the pictures, I did.) The first is "It's time to get up." I have them repeat it to get the right pronunciation. Then, I ask "What time do you get up?" They yell out answers, "8 o'clock! 7:30!" I pick one answer and say "Repeat after me. It's 7:30. It's time to get up."
For the "don't...." slides I just asked "what's this?" and they reply "Don't play computer games." Then I act like a stern mother and say "Don't play computer games!" or I'll ask who's mother says "Don't play computer games!"?
I explain that some slides require the students to say the time (it's 7:30) and the "it's time to.." Other slides just require "It's time to.." I then explain the points (duh), stealing (take two from another team), bomb(no points), and dynamite(lose all your points), and then start playing. 6 teams with about 5 students per team. I go in order 1-6. They pick a letter and get 5 seconds to talk to their teammates about the answer. Then I say "What's the answer?" and together they say it. If they don't know the answer (I give them many chances), then another group can take the question, but they must answer fast. I write the points on the board, and if there's time we play it again.

Awesome game! Thanks a lot for posting it. I'm going to try it for my online class. Just a quick question, what is the picture of the girl tiptoeing supposed to mean? Don't sneak away? Don't be crafty? hahahaha Just wondering!

Ha ha, I really wanted to delete that picture. It's supposed to mean "Don't go away" and is right out of the lesson. This lesson teaches phrases parents say to kids.. maybe it should have been "Don't you dare walk away from me!"

Wow Complex303, this game is amazing!
We're so behind at my school we're only on Unit 15 now, so it's nice to do something so fun for their last lesson.
Thanks for posting it!

hmmmm, nothing posted in almost a year.
Much as I'd like to help, I just used the book and cd... and a boring old lesson it was too!

Hey guys!
Here are a few worksheets i have found! May be a little easy for your students but here they are :-)
This lesson isn't too bad from the text book ideas. There is a spin game in part 2 and make a book in part 4!
On these worksheets there is writing practice, bingo, card game and more writing practice but the questions can be asked to classmates and then written down.
When do you ____? Write down the question and answer.

I have to do an open class for the second part of this unit. Any ideas?
I usually open my classes with a video warm-up. I was then going to quickly go through the CD material (since its mandatory at my school). After that, I was going to run through a quick PPT, followed by some sort of activity/game. I usually save bomb games for the review classes, so thats out of the question for me.
Any tips/advice on what activity I should use? This is for a small, low-level school. And my kids typically lack any motivation unless there is some sort of competition involved with the activity. They are already split up into 3 groups which compete throughout the semester, so I can't really change that part.

I started with a boring ppt that's not worth posting to present/practice the language, then moved on to the rock, scissors paper activity. It's pretty self explanatory; Ss fill in the blanks according to the pictures (word bank provided) and then played RSP to get to the top of the paper. First S to the top is the winner.
Then I played Blockbusters (template downloaded from this site). More than half the questions are from this unit, but many are review questions from the entire 6th grade school year up to this point.

Here is the link to the "What time is it?" song from High School Musical 2. For some reason my 6th graders have been really interested in High School Musical lately.

A short ppt on how to tell time.
You might want to print out the last slide (it is an image I found on google).
