Musical Pursuit (Music Game)
« on: July 04, 2016, 05:47:31 PM »
Here's a game I made for post-exams. It's played like Trivial Pursuit in that they collect colors from different categories.

There are five categories in all:

  • Pop: Listen to the song and fill in the blanks.
  • K-pop: Read the lyrics and guess the song they came from. (Underlined lyrics are originally English. Non-underlined lyrics have been translated from Korean.
  • Words: Read the word and write (or sing) a song that has that word in it.
  • Listen: Listen to 8bit versions of songs and guess what they are.
  • Watch: Watch music videos and answer a question about them.

I've played it with three classes so far and they really got into it! The best part is that no group is really far behind, and even if a group collects all 5, you can still keep playing because of special "score events" that show up occasionally.

This was optimized for PPT 2010, so don't worry about the scoreboard resetting!

The file size is HUGE, so I put it on Google Drive. You'll need Quicktime Player for the movies.

The Google Drive folder also has the two fonts that I used in the game in case your computer doesn't have them.

Download link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5WwdTbLeZL-UldBdlhBMFRhRG8&usp=sharing

If your school doesn't have MS Office anymore, you can use PPT Viewer to run it. Download PPT Viewer here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13

Edit: I added the correct font to the folder. Now it should look the way I intended it to if you download both fonts and install them on your computer.

The K-Pop song by Produce 101 is called "Pick Me" not "Pick Me Up." Just FYI in case a student says something. (Sorry about my mistake!)

TygerBeat: You're welcome!

GotMyTowel: I've done it with third grade middle school and first grade high school. So middle school and early high school would work. It may be too easy for older high school students.

Is there any way to play the video clips again? And how did your students do with the Words category. Mine aren't very creative so I'm not sure that they'll be able to think of lyrics.

Also, what do you do with the points for singer and song name, since you are also using the color dots?

I'm excited to try this game! I'm a little confused about the Word category, though. For all the other categories, it makes sense for all teams to write their answer and the first correct answer wins. But for Word, do all teams take turns singing a song and you choose the best one? Are they supposed to sing a pre-existing song that contains that word, or make up a song?

azalea:  I would use the points for Pop and K-pop to determine which team got the dot in case of one team being faster than the other. (Like 1 team only wrote the fill-in-the-blank parts, but another team wrote the blanks and the singer and song name). You can take the points out, and it'll still work.

The Song part was chaotic, but the kids got into it. Whichever team had everyone singing a song with that word in it got the point. They don't have to make up lyrics, just use a song that already exists. I used words from songs they know (Let It Go, Love is an Open Door, The Show). You can also just have them write the lyrics if you think they won't sing or it'll be too noisy. They can usually think of easy songs like that.

The way I have it set up, the video plays once. You can change the PPT to make it so it plays on click instead of automatically, and not to hide the video when they're not in use. Otherwise, the easiest way to play the more than once is to pause right before the end of the video and go back to the beginning. A lot of my students could answer after one play, though.

amanda: I'm glad it's working for you!

Thank you so much for this. It has been perfect for the post exam period. Used it yesterday with high school girls and they got so into it. The 'steals' and 'destroys' add an extra level of....hmmm....competition is too small a word....war. An extra level of war ^^

I opened it using Hancom since Microsoft isn't an option anymore but I can't seem to get it to link to the slides. When I click on the number, it just disappears. Anyone else with this issue? I love the game otherwise :)

I work at an all boys-middle school. I'll have to adapt this to their taste, but thanks for the layout!

You're welcome! I've played it with all boys classes, and they really enjoyed it, too. :) Their only complaint was "Teacher! More girl groups!" for the K-pop slides.

Been playing this game at my boys middle school for the past 2 days, and every class has loved it. Blue and Red categories have proven to be the most difficult, but I give them all the time they need to try, and we have a lot of fun trying to guess words and figure things out. Thank you for this!

This works on my work computer, but not on the one in my English room... I don't know what the problem is. I was so excited to use this today too.

Oh no! I'm sorry it doesn't work. :( Are the versions of PPT different in your office and your English room computers?

You can try Powerpoint Viewer if your English room is running PPT 2007 and not 2010 or 2013: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13

Hello! It sucks that MS Office isn't an option for you now. :(

You can try PPT Viewer: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=13

It's free to download and run!

Thanks to everyone who commented and have successfully used this in their classes! I'm happy it's working for you guys; after using so many games from the Waygook community, I thought I'd give back. :)

Used it today.  Great job!  Thank you!

I had more than 6 groups, so I redrew the points grid on the blackboard.  I had a class of 27 students and I wanted groups of three, so that's 9 teams.  Still, it worked well.  Top tip- get the students to write their team name across the top of their mini-whiteboard.

Also, the question grid squares didn't disappear after they were selected.  I was expecting to click on, say, K-Pop 3, do the question, then when I got back to the main page, to see that K-Pop 3 had disappeared.  Is it supposed to?  I got around this by drawing the question grid on the board and marking off each question as it was used.

Anyway, awesome, inspired, and well-executed quiz.  Thanks!  I am playing it with Y2 and Y3 middle school.
