(2011 National) Grade 5, Lesson 15 - "Can You Join Us?"
« on: December 03, 2009, 03:05:42 pm »
Here is a simple worksheet that introduces the new topic and gets the students listening.  The section where it says color is an area where you can have them fill in the colors in the smaller squares.  Enjoy! ;)

Grade 5 Lesson 15 - "Can you join us?"
« Reply #1 on: December 10, 2009, 03:20:17 pm »
I made this for the second period class after they had already been introduced to the phrases. After practicing with the first set of slides, I divided the class into 4 teams. Team A chooses a number. If there's a picture Joon playing soccer then they say "Let's play soccer. Can you join us?" The the rest  of the class chimes in with the response "Sure/Sorry, I can't..."

5th grade Can you join us ?

Game: you say
My friends and I are going on a camping trip. Can you join us?
BUT  if you want to come you must bring something.
Then tell them.
My name is Sarah and I'll bring  sweets.  (change as appropriate)
The first letter of name must match first letter of what you are bringing.

They have to say
"My name is __________ and I'll bring ________. Can I join you?"

If they get it right tell them they can join you. If not, they can't.
Let them discover the rules themselves. Write up the ones who can go.
Laura is bringing  Lemons. John is bringing Jelly. Tom is bringing T- shirts.
Joe is bring Japan etc to give clues.
Ask everyone in the class one by one what they are bringing.
It does change the phrase around a bit but they enjoyed it.

You can change the rules, or for advanced classes ask them to come up with their own rules.

I was a bit bored today because I had no classes so I put together a simple RPS practice worksheet for 'Can you join us?'

RPS to decide who goes first.  Then the winner says
'Let's play soccer, can you join us?'
RPS
If the person asking the question wins...his opponent says 'o.k, let's play soccer' and he gets to move his counter upwards.  If he loses then his opponent says 'Sorry, I can't'

silly / fun powerpoint for explaining / drilling the vocab.

The running dictation is always chaos... but fun. I give 5 points for finishing 1st, 4 for 2nd etc. then -1 point for each (big) mistake.

I used this last year (the attached Christmas songs were for the use in an extra class, i no longer have this version of powerpoint so can not edit it out). It includes a recap of vocab plus two activities.

The first, the students need to memorise the sentences from the starsalior Youtube video which is already posted the on this thread.

The second is a game of pairs- click once on the number to reveal the picture and a second time to cover it again for an incorrect answer.

I am using this board game in my class, but have also made a Round Robin Tournament to get them a little bit more excited about the concepts.  I have posted the tournament template on the board and now each student is very eager to "advance" to the next round.  Since the winner is determined by RPS for the actual game, I don't feel as hesitant by having a round robin tourney as all students have a fairly equal chance of advancing!

For 1차시, I just made a simple "Pass the Ball" .PPT/game for students to practice some of the vocabulary and the sentence structure. It's just a simple game.

I have a question about the Camping Game. I like the idea a lot, but some of my students have a hard time writing their names in English. How did you play this? Did you have any difficulties in this regard?
Thanks

You'd want to run that pic with the chick playing the video game across your co-teacher.  Showing cleavage in Korea is still pretty taboo.  That pic would particularly not go well with elementary school kids.

Hi Guys;

Can anyone tell me what the activity in the textbook (pg. 124) Number 2 is about?  what are we supposed to do with 1,2,3,4,5,6?  I don't have a co-teacher so I have no one to ask.
Also in Aha Enlgish pg. 150 Read and Write (2) what are they supposed to do with that also?
Normally I have no problems figuring out what is expected of the students for each activity but I want to double check with these ones.

Thanks!
Kimberly
