Elementary Summer Camp - Numbers / Math games
« on: July 08, 2016, 10:44:32 PM »
Hello,

For anyone doing summer camp at school this year. I have worked really hard putting some cool games together.  I thought it would be nice to share them, as Waygook has been so helpful for me during my first year at an elementary school.

So i have many dice games, including 'Ship, Captain and Crew', 'Farkle', 'Yahtzee', 'High score' and a few other simple games, too.  I have tried to explain each game in a PPT, so touch wood, it all makes sense, but if you aren't 100% sure, you can easily find the required information on the internet.  Plus, Ive downloaded instructions in PDF, too.

I think using numbers is a good way for students to learn and improve English, plus its a balance between learning and having fun.  Being a summer camp, I'm leaning more towards fun than study, study, more study! I want the students to have a good time and not feel burdened with more work over the "vacation" period!

Anyway, I hope you get to use my materials and have fun playing these games with your students at Summer Camp!

Best wishes!
Pau

Speaking of numbers - I highly recommend you check out big brain academy on nintendo DS.

Install the PC emulator and find the rom for big brain academy- and there are 2 amazing math based games.  One is math-based where you read a math equation 'five plus seven is' and type the correct answer. I get students to do this one in teams - one student sits down at the computer and has to type the answers spoken out by other teammates (I even block one side of the screen so that the student typing can only see the keyboard side and not the equation side, so that he/she focuses on listening rather than attempting to solve the equation on his/her own).

The second game is counting blocks (this one is great for students who don't yet know how to read) - it's actually pretty hard - and I use a similar teaching method as I do with the first game.   They are incredibly fun and great for developing listening/reading/speaking and counting skills.

Life is full of questions

Death is full of answers

May you die well and learn.

Here's a PPT that I made to explain the dice game "10,000." The game originally requires people to roll 1,000 points before they can start keeping track of points but I recommend cutting that rule with younger kids.  Hope it helps someone!

***EDIT: I didn't realize that this game is also called Farkle and has already been posted. I will leave it here though because I used a lot of pictures and stuff to try and explain it and it may help younger learners***
