Best games for pre summer holiday lessons
« on: July 11, 2016, 10:48:43 AM »
What are some of the best games you can recommend for an all boys middle school?
We have finished all the lessons and I can't start the next section of the book till after summer. I don't want to just show movies I would rather they do something that involves learning and having fun. I have played Hot seat and a couple bomb games last week that went down really well.

I just wanted peoples thoughts on some games they have played with students when you have the absolute freedom to teach whatever you like?

The students really love competitive games, they are all in teams and earn stars each lesson. Any suggestions?

There are a couple of Family Feud games that work pretty well. Just search for them and hopefully one of them will result in an enjoyable class.

I did a tongue twister lesson.

1. I gave them the handout and reviewed tongue twisters on a ppt (see attached)

2. I put them in groups of 4-5 and play "Baskin Robbins 31" with Peter Piper and the Woodchuck one. Basically, each person can say 1, 2 or 3 words from the tongue twisters at a time and whoever ends up saying the last one loses and is eliminated. They played until each group has one winner. Winners can to the front of the classroom for the finals. The group of the winner of the finals got a prize.

3. See which group can read all of the short tongue twisters the fastest. I gave the students 5 minutes to practice. There were seven short tongues twisters and each group member had to read at least one, but all of the tongue twisters needed to be read (so some students read two). I timed each group to see who could do it the fastest. They got really into it.

Pass the bomb speed reading games are good too and same with memory games (they get 20 seconds to look at a picture and then ask a question about the picture).

There was a recent lesson made by a teacher on Waygook.  He made an Overwatch bomb game, that I have used by putting in my own review questions.  You can look it up.  The boys seem to enjoy the theme, it's probably the most popular PC game right now.  I also downloaded the game's music online to play in the background during class.
