15 minute morning class - ideas please
« on: July 13, 2016, 01:08:32 AM »
I'm working in a very small Elementary school and they don't have enough lessons on the regular schedule to fill my contract hours, so they've given me an extra 15 minute lesson every morning. These lessons are held in their homerooms rather than my English room but all the rooms have a board, a TV and a computer.

At the start my co-teacher suggested using this as a 'story time' but it was difficult to find stories that were engaging enough without being too challenging, and also applicable to grades 3 to 6. After a few weeks I changed it to a 'Music Morning' because I hoped hearing pop songs would wake the kids up. I let them vote and pick a song they liked so we could attempt to make a video of them singing once they had learnt the song. (Incredibly obvious side note: kids are indecisive/prone to stupid decisions)

I'm looking for alternative suggestions for this 15 minute period - preferably something that can be adapted for all the grades and wakes them up before their period 1 class (which is usually with me). Thanks in advance

If their first period class is usually with you, why not try to find little videos on youtube that will relate to your lesson. Something funny, or that has a catchy song will wake them up and prepare them for the larger lesson ahead.

Get a routine going that will suck up a certain amount of time maybe? Like focus on what maybe you would do if you were a homeroom teach. Do a morning song ( hello, hello, good morning!), ask about the date and time and the weather. For the older students have them write the date and weather in a note book and write 2-5 sentences either using what they are learning in class or a very easy prompt like " what will you do today?"OR I did a study on mindfulness meditation effects on children, so if you teach them to write positive intentions in the morning like " I will work hard" or " I will smile a lot today" it can help them have a better mindset throughout the day.  Then you can have some people volunteer to read their sentences. You can also use the time to talk about what you will do in class later that day or finish work from the day before or focus on vocabulary and spelling ( prepare a spelling test once a week or a translation quiz) they may hate it but its super helpful for them in the long run.

For the younger students I would keep it phonics focused, may every week teach 5 letters, and really focus on the sounds of those letters, and if they are more advanced get them to read 3 letter words.

Make them topical, or ask what the homeroom teachers are teaching about that day. That way you don't necessarily have to lesson plan. Just think of phrases associated with the topics or phrases you think that will be used in that class. That way you have a relevant 15 minute lesson that just teaches them content words and expressions, while not being a full blown lesson. It will have them thinking about these English phrases well into their day when they're doing their lessons in Korean.

Maybe try, if you are able to plan in advance, to make little five minute worksheets for these stunted lessons.
