I have to teach this lesson twice (period 1 & period 2), but I don't have many materials.  So I made a PPT (attached), and will follow the 5th grade guide for the first period i.e. ask what everyone did yesterday, then ask what they did last weekend, then start the powerpoint for last summer vacation and then play "slam n' snatch".  For the game the flashcards from the book sortof sucked, so I made new ones.

For period 2, I don't know what I'm going to do yet.  Any ideas?  I just know they'll learn Jingle Bell Rock (off of Ddeubel's //elfclassroom.ning.com).  Maybe make a Christmas card?

I tried to open the attachments but my computer couldn't find the program.   Is the attached supposed to have an 'x' at the end of it?  ppt(x)?   Which program are you using.  Thanks.

Thanks.

I did fix the problem myself.   I downloaded something from microsoft - something to upgrade to 2007 for powerpoint - to upgrade this computer.   In case someone else has the same problem.   I noticed other attachments in other topics had the same problem.

Ha, that's excellent!  Just so you know, I didn't create the bomb game.  My coteacher found it off that website that us foreign teachers don't have access to.

Here's another game I found off of eflclassroom.ning.com called the BAAM game.  It looks similar to the bomb game. I was planning on using this for the second time I teach this lesson.

Yesterday I played the Slam n' snatch game and it was fantastic.  The kids loved it and they said "Did you have a nice vacation?" and "What did you do?" over and over without echoing me.  I laminated the flashcards so I can use them for every class.

To calm the students down after the game I created a word search off of Discovery's Puzzlemaker (you can google it).  I've attached that too.

This is an easy snakes and ladder game that I made using pictures from the Simpsons.  When they land on a square they have to answer according to the picture.  When they take a card they have to change to past tense.

dudes and dudettes,

I've gotta do my open class using lesson 16, 2nd period in mid December.  Post your amazing ideas.  This is a shameless plea so I can make sure I go down in a blaze of glory in the last few months of my final contract in K-land.   :P

I liked the BAAM game but I thought it was too short so I added new slides. However, I couldn't figure out how the number template worked because it didn't seem to be using hyperlinks so I put it all into a new template.

Since I play with 3 teams in each class this one has 18 slides and I play to taking it in turns, just like bomb game etc.

This is a revised ppt from an earlier post.  I just changed the slides saying summer 2009 to winter 2010.

Just to share....
I'm going to use sailerteacher's video (youtube-> "did you have a nice vacation" by sailerteacher) to intro the first lesson (thanks sailerteacher, whoever you are, wherever you are!!!!) and "Poor bear trying to have a nice vacation" (by bigstuff1234) video to open the 2nd lesson (ask did he have a good vacation? What did he do? after)

I'm also swiping the Connect 4 game and What did you do do really ppt previously posted in Gr.6 lesson4 and Grade 4 lesson 16 lessons respectively (cuz this is my last year, so I'm not worrying about repeating stuff with them next year ㅋㅋㅋ).

Last, I'm going to try flip cup with them. I've never tried it in a class bigger than 15 kids, so not sure how it's gonna turn out, but hopefully well! For those who only know alcoholic flip cup, here's how to play with English:
make small cards with either a key word or picture on them and 1 cup for each team. Put 1 card in the cup for each kid (1 at a time). 1 by 1 the kids come up, make a sentence from the card, flip the cup, then sit down. The team to have all members speak a sentence and flip the cup first wins. They loooooove it. ^^

Hi all,

Here's a very basic worksheet for lesson 16, period 1.

Hope it's helpful!

I used this game with a class of 28, and they really loved it - it worked so well.  The only downside was, I wish they had gotten in a bit more speaking practice.

The Poor Bear video was awesome, too.  The kids were cracking up.
