International Travel Lesson - culture and why English?
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:30:17 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I created this lesson for my school's English festival to explore the places that my students could travel to if they knew English.

It includes:

1. a power point presentation of 6 different countries that use the English language,
2. a worksheet to help students write a postcard
3. a template for making a postcard and
4. a template for making flags

My 3rd and 4th graders made flags while my 5th and 6th graders made postcards.

Instructions for making flags:
Students picked out the flag of the country they most wanted to visit and wrote the name of the country and their name on the back of the flag.  When they finished writing and coloring the flag, they came up to my desk so I could check their spelling.  If everything was correct, I attached a straw with tape to create the flag.

Instructions for the postcards:
Students filled out one item for each category in the attached worksheet during the presentation.  At the end of the presentation, students picked the postcard flag of the country the most wanted to visit and followed the template for writing the postcards in the powerpoint.

Enjoy!

Pretty awesome!!

I will be using this lesson in conjunction with an amazing "countries of the world" game on www.sporcle.com (that everyone should check out, I just stumbled on it this morning) as well as a print out from Wikipedia of all the English speaking countries in the world.

I will first start the game on the tv and have students guess some English speaking countries, while populating them on the world map from the game.  Then I will put all the countries on the map just to "hammer home" the point of how diverse the regions/areas/peoples are that have english as an official language.

Then go into this ppt/ wksht and finish with the postcard.

Viola!

Thanks for the great materials. This is the correct url for the sporcle game mentioned before: http://www.sporcle.com/games/world.php

Here is a story about landmarks around the world, as well as worksheets, a vocabulary practice section and a lucky wheel game. I think it will fit in well with the previously-posted materials.

I made this PPT for the last day of a travel themed camp. It's a lead in for a tower building project.
