Outdoor Lessons
« on: June 28, 2011, 04:21:38 PM »
My students are really keen to have a couple of classes outdoors. They are currently sitting for their exams and post-exams they will have 2 weeks of non-textbook classes. We are going to split the class so that there are about 14 students per class and focus on conversation.

I am wondering what conversation based activities I can incorporate- they seem to be under the impression that if I take them outside they will play a game of soccer!

Any suggestions?

They are high level students.

A scavenger hunt may be effective if you are teaching about giving and listening to directions. You can also implement certain topics from your lesson in each station of the scavenger hunt.

Thanks! I am going to do a Survivor Challenge. I'm hoping the weather clears up!

I am going to teach a Naure Poem class.

I will take the students outside and let them wander around within eye distance.  They can pick one or a few items to write about...then do a "free-write" poem.
I did this with my 6th graders last year.  They really liked it.

I decided to go with an activity based on the Amazing Race. We were able to have one class outside (it was preferable to using the gym), we needed to have the other classes in the gym because of the weather. I found that having more space was great for hiding clues etc.

I will try and post the ppt and templates soon.

It worked really well- the students were very enthusiastic, but I think I could improve it. I was teaching students by myself so there were times where it became a little chaotic.

I don't have the lesson on this computer but there's the zombie game where there are doctors, citizens and zombies.

I can't remember how it's exactly played but the citizens are given actions to perform such as "running in place, jumping rope, tying a shoe, leap frog or whatever.

Make 2/3rds of the classroom citizens, 1/6th zombies and another sixth doctors.

Zombies and doctors ask the citizens "What are you doing?" and they reply while doing the action.

If they are questioned by the zombie they stay still.  Doctors can come along and heal them to normal.

Taking students outside is a nice break from the repetition of inside the classroom. I have my students do an inside/outside poem. They love it.

I downloaded someone's directions for an Amazing Race, changed it a little then got really into it and made the actual clues from the race.

everything is explained in the directions. let me know if you've got questions.

Enjoy!
